A Review Journal

Guide for Authors

Authors are encouraged to submit their papers using the Elsevier Editorial System online submission tool at: External link http://ees.elsevier.com/susrep

Original material: Submission of a paper implies that it has not been published previously, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that if accepted it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, without the written consent of the publisher.

Preparation of manuscript: All manuscripts should be written in proper English. Both hard copy (for refereeing) and electronic (for printing) versions of the manuscript are required. More information on the electronic text can be found in the section entitled "Electronic text of manuscripts" below. The paper copies of the text should be prepared with double line spacing and wide margins, on numbered sheets.

Structure. Please adhere to the following order of presentation: Title, Author(s), Affiliation(s), Abstract, Keywords, Main text, Acknowledgements, Appendices, References, Figure captions, Tables.

Corresponding author. The name, complete postal address, telephone and fax numbers and the e-mail address of the corresponding author should be given on the first page of the manuscript.

Keywords. Authors are requested to supply one or more PACS classification codes . Also they are requested to supply a maximum of eight keywords and put them below the abstract.

References. References should only be given to published material; references are not allowed to be footnotes and references to not readily accessible reports should be avoided. The list of references may be organized according to the number system. Please note: A reference should not contain more than one article.

Note: In the case of multiple authorship all authors should be listed in the references provided they number less than ten. Only in the case of more than 10 authors is "first author et al." acceptable.

Footnotes. Footnotes should be consecutively numbered. They will appear on the page of text they are referred to. They are not allowed as a reference as stated above, obviously they may refer to a reference.

Illustrations: For online submissions, electronic graphics are mandatory. Online instructions are at External link http://ees.elsevier.com/susrep and Artwork instructions are at: External link http://www.elsevier.com/locate/authorartwork

If your are not submitting online, illustrations should also be submitted in triplicate: one master set and two sets of copies. The line drawings in the master set should be original laser printer or plotter output or drawn in black india ink, with careful lettering, large enough relative to the size of the figure, to remain legible after reduction for printing. Photographs should be originals, with somewhat more contrast than is required in the printed version. They should be unmounted unless part of a composite figure. Any scale markers should be inserted on the photograph itself, not drawn below it.
Besides the need to always submit a high quality original hardcopy of every figure included with the manuscript, authors are asked, at revision stage, to also send electronic versions, on a separate disk. Especially for halftones (micrographs (AFM, STM, TEM, SEM etc.) and images) better results can be achieved when reproducing from electronic files. Authors may use any of the following media: floppy, CD-ROM or Zip-disk.
For a full version of instructions for submitting electronic graphics contact our web-site: External link http://www.elsevier.com/artworkinstructions.

Main points of attention:
- Do not use screendump graphics as originals. They are of low resolution, and will cause technical problems.
- Do not send file formats such as: GIF, BMP, PICT, WPG, DOC, or PPT.
- Do not send send graphic/image files enclosed in MS-Word, WordPerfect, Excel, Powerpoint or any other wordprocessing/spreadsheet/presentation program.

Format/resolutions: The following formats/resolutions should be adhered to in all cases: for hardcopy, possibly from scanned original data, as well as for electronic files:EPS: Vector and bitmap drawings/photos: always use 72 dpi., and enclose the font.JPEG: Color or grayscale photographs (halftones): always 300 dpi. Color images always use CMYK. JPEG: Combinations line/halftone: a minimum of 500 dpi is required. Color images always use CMYK.TIFF: Line figures: use between 600 dpi and 1000 dpi.TIFF: Combinations line/halftone: a minimum of 500 dpi is required.Native formats of drawing programs: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Aldus Freehand, CorelDraw.

Note: The Publisher reserves the right to publish the figures from the hardcopy supplied.

Formulae:Formulae in the manuscript should be typed with particular consideration given to characters that may be misinterpreted, e.g. I (cap.), l (el), 1 (one), N (prime); c, C; K, p, P, rho); o (lower case), O (cap.), 0 (zero), u, v (lower case), v (nu), V (cap.), H (multiplication symbol), x (lower case), X (cap.); S (sigma), 3 (sum), Π (pi), J (product); etc.

Electronic text of manuscripts: The publisher requires an electronic version of your accepted manuscript. If there is not already a copy of this with the journal editor at the time the manuscript is being refereed, you will be asked to send a file with the text of the revised manuscript. All major text processing packages can be handled, but text in either Word or LaTeX is preferred. Please note that no deviations from the version accepted by the editor of the journal are permissible without the prior and explicit approval by the editor. LaTeX articles should preferably use the Elsevier document class "elsart", or alternatively the standard document class "article". The elsart LaTeX package (including detailed instructions to authors) can be obtained from External link http://www.elsevier.com/latex. The Elsevier package consists of the files: ascii.tab (ASCII table), elsart.cls (use this file if you are using LaTeX2e, the current version of LaTeX), elsart.sty and elsart12.sty (use these two files if you are using LaTeX2.09, the previous version of LaTeX), instraut.dvi and/or instraut.ps (instruction booklet), readme. Kindly submit the files of the final version of your article through External link http://ees.elsevier.com/susrep. Please make sure that you attach the source file of your manuscript (LaTeX or Word), attach each figure separately and that you number them consecutively.

Note: In case files prove to be unusable, the Publisher reserves the right to publish the article from the hardcopy supplied.

After acceptance:Notification. The corresponding author will be notified by the editor of the acceptance of the article and urged to supply an electronic version of the accepted text, if this is not already available (usually this request is made at revision stage). Also an electronic version of illustrations will be asked for.Copyright transfer. In the course of the production process you will be asked to transfer copyright of the article to the publisher. This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information.Page proofs. When page proofs are made and sent out to authors, this is in order to check that no undetected errors have arisen in the typesetting (or file conversion) process. No changes in, or additions to, the edited manuscript will be accepted.

Author benefits:Reprints. The corresponding author of each paper will be provided with a PDF of the article in its published form. Authors wishing to order additional paid reprints should indicate the number of reprints required when returning proofs.

Discount. Contributors to Elsevier Journals are entitled to a 30% discount on all Elsevier books. Contents Alert. Surface Science Reports is included in Elsevier's pre-publication service Contents Alert.
