JOURNAL OF INTERNATIONAL ECONOMICS

Peer Review Policy Journal of International Economics

The practice of peer review is to ensure that high quality scientific material is published. It is an objective process at the heart of competitive academic publishing and is carried out by all reputable scientific journals. Our referees therefore play a vital role in maintaining the high standards of the Journal of International Economics. Manuscripts are peer reviewed according to the procedures described below.

Special issues and conference proceedings may have different peer review procedures involving, for example, Guest Editors, conference organisers, or scientific committees. Authors contributing to these projects may receive full details of the peer review process on request from the editorial office.

Initial manuscript evaluation
The Editor first evaluates all manuscripts. Although it is an extremely rare occurrence, the Editor may accept an exceptional manuscript at this first stage. The Editor may also reject a manuscript at this stage because it is insufficiently original, has serious scientific flaws, is ungrammatical, is written in poor English, or falls outside the aims and scope of the journal. Those that meet the minimum criteria are passed on to experts for review.

Authors of manuscripts rejected at this stage will be informed within 2 weeks of receipt.

Type of Peer Review
The journal typically employs single blind review, where the referees remain anonymous throughout the process. On rare occasion it may employ double blind reviewing, where both the referees and author remain anonymous throughout the process, or open refereeing, where both the referees and author are known to one another.

How the referee is selected
Referees are matched to the paper according to their expertise.

Referee reports
Referees are asked to evaluate whether the manuscript:
- Is original
- Is methodologically sound
- Follows appropriate ethical guidelines
- Has results which are clearly presented and support the conclusions
- Correctly references previous relevant work
These criteria are necessary but not sufficient for a positive decision.

Referees are not expected to correct or edit manuscripts. Language correction is not part of the peer review process.

How long does the review process take?
The time between receipt of the original submission and initial response (acceptance, rejection, or request for revision) averages about four months, but with a wide variation that depends heavily on how quickly referees provide reports. Referees or the editor may request more than one revision of a manuscript before a final decision to accept or reject it.

Final report
A final decision to accept or reject the manuscript will be sent to the corresponding author along with any recommendations made by the referees, and may include verbatim comments made by the referees.

Editor's Decision is final
Referees advise the editor, who is responsible for the final decision to accept or reject the manuscript.
