Guide for Authors

Official Journal of the European Marketing Academy

(1) Papers must be published in US English. Preferably, the length of a paper should not exceed 7000 words.

(2)Submission for all types of manuscripts to the International Journal of Research in Marketing totally online, via the Elsevier Editorial System Web site for this journal at http://ees.elsevier.com/ijrm. You will be guided stepwise through the creation and uploading of the various files. When submitting a manuscript to Elsevier Editorial System, authors need to provide an electronic version of their manuscript. In an accompanying cover letter, authors should state that the manuscript, or parts of it, have not been and will not be submitted elsewhere for publication. Please note that an editable file is needed for production purposes after acceptance, and we ask that you submit source files in the case that your manuscript is accepted. PDF files are also acceptable. Authors are requested to include a cover letter, manuscript, tables, and figures, as well as any ancillary materials.

Authors unable to submit an electronic version should contact the Editorial Office.

Authors should select a category designation for their manuscripts (article, short communication, review, etc.). Once the uploading is done, the system automatically generates an electronic (PDF) proof, which is then used for reviewing once approved and submitted to the journal by the author. All correspondence, including the editor's decision and request for revisions, will be by e-mail to the corresponding author of the paper.

Submission of a paper will be held to imply that it contains original unpublished work and is not being submitted for publication elsewhere. The Editor does not accept responsibility for damage or loss of papers submitted. Upon acceptance of an article, author(s) will be asked to transfer copyright of the article to the publisher. This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information. In exceptional cases when the author is unable to provide an electronic file, five hard copies of the paper should be sent.

(3) Acknowledgements and information on grants received can be given on the submitted manuscript but should only be included on the first page which is omitted from the version sent to the reviewers. In the final version, accepted for publication, they should be before the References.

(4) Footnotes (bottom of pages) should be kept to a minimum and numbered consecutively throughout the text with superscript Arabic numerals.

(5) Displayed formulae should be numbered consecutively throughout the manuscript as (1), (2), etc. against the right-hand margin of the page. In cases where the derivation of formulae has been abbreviated, it is of great help to the referees if the full derivation can be presented on a separate sheet (not to be published).

(6) References to publications in the text should follow the APA style. They should include the authors name(s) and year of publication. There are two methods that can be used, either
(a) When the name is mentioned in the text, or
(b) When the name is not directly part of the text.

Examples:
For publications by one author:
Either: (a) as Smith (1999) reported or (b) This problem has been previously studied (Smith, 1999).
For publications by two authors:
Either: (a) as Smith and Jones (1999) reported or (b) This problem has been studied previously (Smith & Jones, 1999).
For publications by three to five authors:
For the first instance the reference is mentioned, use either: (a) as Smith, Jones, White, and Brown (1999) reported or (b) This problem has been studied previously (Smith, Jones, White, & Brown, 1999). For subsequent references use Smith et al. (1999). For subsequent references within the same paragraph the year may be omitted.
For publications by more than five authors:
Either: (a) as Smith et al. (1999) reported or (b) This problem has been studied previously (Smith et al., 1999).
For works without author, list the title of the work instead of the authors.

(7) Bibliographic references should also follow the APA-style of referencing. Readers are referred to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, Fourth Edition, ISBN 1-55798-243-0, copies of which may be ordered from APA Order Dept., P.O.B. 2710, Hyattsville, MD 20784, USA or APA, 3 Henrietta Street Covent Garden, London, WC3E 8LU, UK.

Examples in APA style are as follows:
(a) Journal-type publications:
Reference to an article in a journal:
Paivio, A., Jansen, B., & Becker, L. J. (1975). Comparisons through the mind's eye. Cognition, 37(2), 635-647.
Reference to a journal supplement:
Yuen, A.W. C. (1994). Lamotrigine: a review of antipileptic efficacy. Epilepsia, 35 (Suppl. 5), S33-S36.
Reference to an article in a periodical or newspaper:
Richardson, J. D. (1998, July 15). Evidence for periodic reconnection at Uranus. Forth Worth Star-Telegram, p. E1.
Reference to a special issue (when the special issue itself has a title):
Glaser, R., & Bond, L. (Eds.). (1981). Testing: Concepts and research [Special issue]. American Psychologist, 36 (10).
Reference to a special issue that is also a conference proceedings:
Yasuda, N., Takagi, S.-i., & Toriumi, A. (1997). Spectral shape analysis of infrared absorption of thermally grown silicon dioxide films. Applied Surface Science, 117-18 (June(II)), 216-220.
Note the APA style does not support conference details
Reference to an article in a language other than English:
Assink, E. H. M., & Verloop, N. (1977). Het aanleren van deel-geheel relaties [Teaching part-whole relations]. Pedagogische Studien, 54, 130-142 (in Dutch).
Reference to a collaboration under one common name:
H1 Collaboration. (1997). Evolution of ep fragmentation and multiplicity distributions in the Breit frame. Nuclear Physics B, 504, 3-23.

If author's names are given for a collaboration, delete those and just give the collaboration name for brevity. Use of 'et al' is not allowed in APA style.

Note that in contrast to other name/year referencing systems, publications with the same author and with two, three or four co-authors are listed alphabetically rather than chronologically. That means that publications with two authors are not separated from those with more than two authors.

(8) Preparation of electronic illustrations
Submitting your artwork in an electronic format helps us to produce your work to the best possible standards, ensuring accuracy, clarity and a high level of detail. General points:
•Always supply high-quality printouts of your artwork, in case conversion of the electronic artwork is problematic.
•Make sure you use uniform lettering and sizing of your original artwork.
•Save text in illustrations as "graphics" or enclose the font.
•Only use the following fonts in your illustrations: Arial, Courier, Times, Symbol.
•Number the illustrations according to their sequence in the text.
•Use a logical naming convention for your artwork files, and supply a separate listing of the files and the software used.
•Provide all illustrations as separate files and as hardcopy printouts on separate sheets.
•Provide captions to illustrations separately.
•Produce images near to the desired size of the printed version.
•Files can be stored on 31/2 inch diskette, ZIP-disk or CD (either MS-DOS or Macintosh).

A detailed guide on electronic artwork is available on our website: http://authors.elsevier.com/artworkinstructions .

You are urged to visit this site which contains detailed guidance on: formats for electronic files; non-electronic illustrations; captions; line drawings; photographs; colour illustrations (Note that figures with a single extra supporting colour will incur no extra costs).

(9) Tables should be numbered consecutively in the text in Arabic numerals.

Any manuscript which does not conform to the above instructions may be returned for the necessary revision before publication.

Page proofs will be sent to the corresponding author. Proofs should be corrected carefully; the responsibility for detecting errors lies with the author. Corrections should be restricted to instances in which the proof is at variance with the manuscript. Extensive alterations will be charged.

Reprints
The corresponding author, at no cost, will be provided with a PDF file of the article via e-mail or, alternatively, 25 free paper offprints. The PDF file is a watermarked version of the published article and includes a cover sheet with the journal cover image and a disclaimer outlining the terms and conditions of use. A reprint order form will be sent to authors for purchasing additional reprints. Orders for these must be received before printing to qualify for lower prepublication rates. All co-author reprint requirements should be included on the reprint order form.

All articles published in IJRM will be in US English. However, a paper may be submitted in French or German. In that case the reviewing process is carried out in two rounds. If the result of the first round is a provisional acceptance, the paper is to be translated into English. (This is the responsibility of the author(s).) In the second round the English version of the paper is put through the regular review process. In this process additional revisions may be required from the author, before the paper is definitely accepted.
