Manuscripts must be written in clear and grammatical English and should be submitted in electronic form
by using online manuscript submission available at http://ees.elsevier.com/envsoft . This site will guide authors stepwise
through the submission process. Authors can upload their articles as Microsoft (MS) Word or WordPerfect files. It is also possible to
submit an article in PostScript or Adobe Acrobat PDF format, but if the article is accepted, the original source files will be needed.
If you submit a word processing file, the system generates an Adobe Acrobat PDF version of the article, which is used for the reviewing
process. Authors, reviewers, and editors send and receive all correspondence by e-mail and no paper correspondence is necessary.
If
you are not able to submit your paper to ENVSOFT electronically please contact the Editor-in-Chief, Dr. A. J. Jakeman at: tony.jakeman@anu.edu.au
Submission of a paper implies that it has not been published previously, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere,
and that if accepted it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, without the written consent
of the publisher.
To submit a paper for ShortComs or an item for Software and Data News, authors are still advised to go to http://ees.elsevier.com/envsoft
for submission. A submission form and instructions to guide authors through the process is hosted at this site. Authors should upload
their contributions as a PDF or Word file and provide the names of up to 5 potential reviewers as well as 5-10 keywords.
Rapid
evaluation process: EMS has a rapid evaluation process in the first stage to assess if manuscripts warrant being sent out for full
review. Submissions that have problems related to the following may be rejected outright and not considered for resubmission: 1.
Topic and its treatment should be within the scope of the journal. 2. Presentation and good structure and grammar - manuscripts may
need to be edited by a professional or native English speaker. 3. Citations in the text should be included in the Reference list
and each reference in the list should be complete in detail and style. 4. Adequate coverage of the literature through the references,
especially more recent articles, including those in the Environmental Modelling and Software Journal. 5. The mathematics should be
clear and all variables explained/defined. 6. Figures and tables should be of good quality. 7. Model and/or software evaluation
and testing must be adequate. 8. A Software Availability Section should be included if relevant
Review process: All manuscripts
are sent to at least two independent reviewers to ensure both accuracy and relevance to the journal. Authors should therefore provide
the names of up to 5 potential reviewers upon submission. The final decision on acceptance will be made by the appropriate Editor. Manuscripts
may therefore be sent back to authors for revision if necessary. Revised manuscript submissions should be made as soon as possible after
the receipt of the reviewer's report. Revised manuscripts returned after four months will be considered as new submissions and will be
subject to the full review process.
Types of Contributions: Research articles, review papers, short communications, software
product reviews, software, data news, commentaries, and book reviews. "Commentaries", i.e., short articles commenting on published work
in EMS and on topics of interest to the wide readership, can be submitted after discussion with the EIC. The "Short Communications Section"
will invite papers that are no longer than 3000 words (7-8 double spaced pages). To the "Software and Data News Section" one can submit
items of less than 750 words. For these short contributions our intent is to keep the review process within a 1 month time period.
Manuscript Preparation General: Manuscripts should be written in English, with double-spacing and wide margins. The
corresponding author should be identified (include a Fax number and E-mail address). Full postal addresses must be given for all co-authors.
Authors should consult a recent issue of the journal for style if possible. The Editors reserve the right to adjust style to certain
standards of uniformity. Authors should retain a copy of their manuscript since we cannot accept responsibility for damage or loss of
papers. Original manuscripts are discarded one month after publication unless the Publisher is asked to return original material after
use.
Abstracts: All manuscripts should be accompanied by an abstract of not more than 200 words (100 words for "Software and
Data News" items) describing the entire paper and a keyword list (5-10 keywords). The abstract should begin by introducing the wider
problem setting and include concluding remarks that address the lessons, transferability or relevance of the work to the wider modelling
and software audiences; e.g. to other environmental domains or geographic areas if the work has focussed on a particular sector of the
environment or location.
Software and/or data availability section: Where appropriate, a software/data availability section
should be provided, containing as much of the following information as possible: name of software or data set, developer and contact
address, telephone, fax and e-mail numbers, year first available, hardware required, software required, availability and cost. Also for
software: program language, program size; for data: form of repository (data base, files, spreadsheet), size of archive, access form.
The software/data availability section is mandatory for all "Software and Data News" items.
Text: Follow this order when
typing manuscripts: Title, Authors, Affiliations, Abstract, Main text, Acknowledgements, Appendix, References, Vitae, Figure Captions
and then Tables. Do not import the Figures or Tables into your text. The corresponding author should be identified with an asterisk and
footnote. All other footnotes (except for table footnotes) should be identified with superscript Arabic numbers.
Units: The
SI system should be used for all scientific and laboratory data; if in certain instances it is necessary to use other units these should
be added in parentheses. Temperatures should be given in degrees Celsius. Where abbreviations are likely to cause ambiguity or not be
readily understood by an international readership, units should be given in full.
Formulae: Formulae should be numbered consecutively
in the right hand side of the column where they appear for the first time. Special symbols (e.g. Greek) should be identified in the margin.
Care should be taken to avoid confusion between letters and numerals.
References: All publications cited in the text should
be presented in a list of references following the text of the manuscript. In the text refer to the author's name (without initials)
and year of publication (e.g. "Since Peterson (1993) has shown that..." or "This is in the agreement with results obtained later (Kramer,
1994)"). For three or more authors use the first author followed by "et al.", in the text. The list of references should be arranged
alphabetically by authors' names. The manuscript should be carefully checked to ensure that the spelling of authors' names and dates
are exactly the same in the text as in the reference list.
References should be given in the following form:
Jolly, I.D., Narayan,
K.A., Armstrong, D., Walker, G.R., 1998. The impact of flooding on modelling salt transport processes to streams. Environmental Modelling & Software 13 (1) 87-104.
Lakhan, V.C., 1989. Computer simulation of shoreward propagating deep and shallow waves. In: Lakham,
V.C., Trenhaile, A.S., (Eds.), Applications in Coastal Modelling. Elsevier: Amsterdam.
Illustrations: Photographs, charts
and diagrams are all to be referred to as "Figure(s)" and should be numbered consecutively in the order to which they are referred. They
should accompany the manuscript, but should not be included within the text.
Color figures in the printed issue can be accepted only if the
authors defray the full cost. However, if together with your accepted article, you submit usable color figures, then Elsevier will ensure,
at no additional charge, that these figures will appear in color on the Web (e.g., ScienceDirect and other sites) regardless of whether
these illustrations are reproduced in color in the printed version. For color reproduction in print, you will receive information regarding
the costs from Elsevier after receipt of your accepted article.
Please note: Because of technical complications that can arise in
converting color figures to "gray scale" (for the printed version should you not opt for color in print), please submit in addition usable
black-and-white files corresponding to all the color illustrations
Tables: Tables should be numbered consecutively and given
a suitable caption and each table typed on a separate sheet. Footnotes to tables should be typed below the table and should be referred
to by superscript lowercase letters. No vertical rules should be used. Tables should not duplicate results presented elsewhere in the
manuscript, (e.g. in graphs).
Multimedia Files: Elsevier now accepts electronic supplementary material to support and enhance
your scientific research. Supplementary files offer the author additional possibilities to publish supporting applications, movies, animation
sequences, high-resolution images, background datasets, sound clips and more. Supplementary files supplied will be published online alongside
the electronic version of your article on Science Direct: http://www.sciencedirect.com . In order to ensure that your submitted
material is directly usable, please ensure that data is provided in one of our recommended file formats. Authors should submit the material
in electronic format together with the article and supply a concise and descriptive caption for each file. For more detailed instructions
please visit our artwork instructions pages at http://authors.elsevier.com/artwork.
Proofs PDF proofs will be
sent by e-mail to the corresponding author. To avoid delay in publication, only necessary changes should be made, and corrections should
be returned promptly.

a cover sheet with the journal cover image and a disclaimer outlining the terms and conditions of use.
Copyright All authors
must sign the "Transfer of Copyright" agreement before the article can be published. This transfer agreement enables Elsevier Ltd to
protect the copyrighted material for the authors, without the author relinquishing his/her proprietary rights. The copyright transfer
covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article, including reprints, photographic reproductions, microfilm or any
other reproductions of a similar nature, and translations. It also includes the right to adapt the article for use in conjunction with
computer systems and programs, including reproduction or publication in machine-readable form and incorporation in retrieval systems.
Authors are responsible for obtaining from the copyright holder permission to reproduce any material for which copyright already exists.
Online Publication Your article will appear on Elsevier's online journal database ScienceDirect as an "Article in Press" within
approximately 4-6 weeks of acceptance. Articles in Press for this journal can be viewed at http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/journal/13648152.
An Article in Press may be cited prior to its publication by means of its unique digital object identifier (DOI) number, which does not
change throughout the publication process.
