Guide for Authors

An International Review Journal

Submission of Papers
Authors are requested to submit 1 electronic copy in Microsoft Word format to prog-poly-sci@andrew.cmu.edu (if e-mail is not possible, authors can submit by post to: The Editors, Progress in Polymer Science, Carnegie Mellon University, 4400 Fifth Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15213, USA.)

Submission of a paper implies that it has not been published previously, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that if accepted it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, without the written consent of the publisher.

Manuscript Preparation
General: Manuscripts must be typewritten, double-spaced with wide margins. All the authors should be identified including E-mail addresses and Fax numbers. Full postal addresses must be given for all co-authors. Authors are requested to supply the names and email addresses for five experts in the subject of their manuscript to be considered by the Editors as potential referees. Authors should consult a recent issue of the journal for style if possible. An electronic copy of the paper should accompany the final version. The Editors reserve the right to adjust style to certain standards of uniformity. Authors should retain a copy of their manuscript since we cannot accept responsibility for damage or loss of papers. Original manuscripts are discarded one month after publication. For additional details, the mission of the journal and format examples, prospective authors may consult either of the following: http://www.chem.cmu.edu/berry/ppsauthors.pdf http://www.chem.cmu.edu/berry/ppsauthors.doc

Language and Style: Manuscripts should be written in English in a clear and concise manner and follow the style of a current issue of Progress in Polymer Science. Authors whose native language is not English should have the spelling, grammar, and style checked by someone fully proficient in the English language. For further help please go to External link http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/authorsview.authors/languageediting/.

Manuscripts which are not written in fluent English will be rejected automatically without refereeing.

Paper length: A full review should be approximately 10,000 to 15,000 words, accompanied by figures, tables and bibliography, with a font size of 12 pt. Manuscripts shorter than this will not be considered for publication unless they are Trends articles invited by the Editors.

Abstracts: An abstract and a list of keywords should be provided on a separate page.

Text: Follow this order when typing manuscripts: Title, Authors, Affiliations, Abstract, Keywords, Main text, Acknowledgements, Appendix, References, Figure Captions and then Tables. Do not import the Figures or Tables into your text. The corresponding author should be identified with an asterisk and footnote. All other footnotes (except for table footnotes) should be identified with superscript Arabic numbers.

Units: SI units should be used whenever possible in all manuscripts, tables and illustrations. Manuscripts containing non-SI units may be returned to the author.

References: All publications cited in the text should be presented in a list of references following the text of the manuscript. In the text refer to references by a number in square brackets on the line (e.g. Since Poser et al. [1]), and the full reference should be given in a numerical list at the end of the paper.
References should be given in the following form:

[1] Gao J, Penlidis A. Mathematical modeling and computer simulator/database for emulsion polymerizations. Progr Polym Sci 2002;27:403-535
[2] Flory PJ. Principles of polymer chemistry. Ithaca, NY: Cornell University Press, 1953.

(The name of the assignee is optional in a patent reference but name of the inventor is required [except for patents of countries which issue patents to countries with no inventors' names given]. If the name of the inventor is not given on the patent, then the name of the assignee must be listed at the beginning of the reference.)

Proofs
Proofs will be sent to the author (first named author if no corresponding author is identified of multi-authored papers) and should be returned within 48 hours of receipt. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors; any others may be charged to the author. Any queries should be answered in full. Please note that authors are urged to check their proofs carefully before return, since the inclusion of late corrections cannot be guaranteed. Offprints
Twenty five offprints will be supplied free of charge. Additional offprints and copies of the issue can be ordered at a specially reduced rate using the order form sent to the corresponding author after the manuscript has been accepted. Orders for reprints (produced after publication of an article) will incur a 50% surcharge.
