Guide for Authors
An International Journal (In association with the
European Aerosol Assembly)
Notes to Contributors
Papers accepted for Journal of Aerosol Science are proofed and published online within six weeks.
1. Submission
Journal of Aerosol Science uses an online, electronic submission system, the Elsevier Editorial System. By accessing
the website
http://ees.elsevier.com/jaerosci/ authors will be guided stepwise through the online submission process, including
upload of the various submission files. When submitting a manuscript to the Elsevier Editorial System, authors need to provide an electronic
version of the manuscript. For this purpose original source files, not PDF files, are preferred. The author should specify an Article
Type for the manuscript (full article, technical notes, reviews (or tutorials/reviews), comments on previsously published articles, including
reply), enter Keywords and choose a set of Classifications from the prescribed list provided online.
Ensure that the following items
are present:• One Author is designated as corresponding Author:• E-mail address• Full postal address• Telephone
and fax numbers• All necessary files have been uploaded• Keywords• All figure captions• All tables (including
title, description, footnotes)• Manuscript has been "spellchecked"• References are in the correct format for this journal
• All references mentioned in the Reference list are cited in the text, and vice versa• Permission has been obtained for use
of copyrighted material from other sources (including the Web)• Colour figures are clearly marked as being intended for colour
reproduction on the Web (free of charge) and in print or to be reproduced in colour on the Web (free of charge) and in black-and-white
in print• If only colour on the Web is required, black and white versions of the figures are also supplied for printing purposes

Authors may send queries concerning the submission process to the Author Support department
authorsupport@elsevier.com.
Queries on manuscript status or journal procedures should be sent to the Editor. Once the submission files are uploaded, the system automatically
generates an electronic (PDF) proof, which is then used for reviewing.
All correspondence, including the Editor's decision and request
for revisions, will be by e-mail.
2. Manuscripts
Manuscripts should in general be organized in the following order: (a)

(d) up to 5 keywords; (e) the main text with sections and subsections; up to three decimal figures can be used to structure the subsections;
(f) references; (g) figure captions, tables, figures, schemes.

3. Illustrations
A detailed guide on electronic artwork is available on our website:
http://www.elsevier.com/artworkinstructions . You
are urged to visit this site. Colour illustrations: Please make sure that artwork files are in an acceptable format (TIFF, EPS or MS
Office files) and with the correct resolution. If, together with your accepted article, you submit usable colour figures then Elsevier
will ensure, at no additional charge, that these figures will appear in colour on the Web (e.g., ScienceDirect and other sites) regardless
of whether or not these illustrations are reproduced in colour in the printed version. For colour reproduction in print, you will receive
information regarding the costs from Elsevier after receipt of your accepted article. Please indicate your preference for colour in print
or on the Web only. Please note: Because of technical complications which can arise by converting colour figures to "grey scale" (for
the printed version should you not opt for colour in print) please submit in addition usable black and white versions of all the colour
illustrations.
4. References
References to literature in the text should be quoted in the form Jones (1998), Jones and
Jones (1998), or Jones
et al. (1998) if there are three or more authors (or if needed in parentheses as Jones
et al.,
1998).
The list of references should be given at the end of the text in alphabetical order, authors surnames first. The title of the
journal should be abbreviated as in the
World List of Scientific Periodicals (4th Edition). Issue numbers of journals should
be omitted except in rare cases where confusion may result.
Some examples are:•Davies, C.N. (1970) The clogging of fibrous
aerosol filters.
J. Aerosol Sci. 1, 35. •Fuchs, N.A. (1964)
The Mechanics of Aerosols Pergamon Press,
Oxford. •
American Institute of Physics Handbook (1972) 3rd Edition. McGraw-Hill, New York. •Fuchs, N.A. and Sutugin,
A.G. (1971) Highly dispersed aerosols. In
Tropics in Current Aerosol Research (Edited by Hidy, G.M. and Brock, J.R.), pp. 1-60.
Pergamon Press, Oxford.•Ouyang, M., Lui, B.Y.H., Rubov, K.L. and Hillamo. R.E. (1994) Effect of particle charge on the collection
efficiency of inertial impactors.
Proc. 4th Int Aerosol Conf., Los Angeles (Edited by Flagan, R.C.), pp. 695-696.
References
to internal or agency reports are usually not acceptable.
Citing and listing of web references. As a minimum, the full URL should
be given. Any further information, if known (author names, dates, reference to a source publication etc.), should also be given. Web
references can be listed separately (.e.g., after the reference list) under a different heading if desired or can be included in the
reference list.
5. SI Units
The use of SI units throughout is recommended; other metric units may be used at the discretion
of the Editors-in-Chief. Non-metric units may be used only exceptionally (e.g.)where they have become internationally accepted industrial
conventions); in such cases, however, the equivalent SI units must be provided in parentheses or, in the case of graphs, by the use of
a second axis.
6. Proofs
One set of page proofs will be sent by E-mail to the corresponding author, (if we do not have
an e-mail address tehn paper proofs will be sent by post). Elsevier now sends PDF proofs which can be annotated; for this you will need
to download Adobe Reader version 7 available free from
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html. Instructions
on how to annotate PDF files will accompany the proofs.
If you do not wish to use the PDF annotations function, you may list the
corrections (including replies to the Query Form) and return to Elsevier in an e-mail. Please list your corrections quoting line number.
If, for any reason, this is not possible, then mark the corrections and any other comments (including replies to the Query Form) on a
printout of your proof and return by fax, or scan the pages and e-mail, or by post.
Please use this proof only for checking the
typesetting, editing, completeness and correctness of the text, tables and figures. Significant changes to the article as accepted for
publication will only be considered at this stage with permission from the Editor. We will do everything possible to get your article
published quickly and accurately. Therefore, it is important to ensure that all of your corrections are sent back to us in one communication:
please check carefully before replying, as inclusion of any subsequent corrections cannot be guaranteed. Proofreading is solely your
responsibility. Note that Elsevier may proceed with the publication of your article if no response is received.
