NEUROPSYCHOLOGIA

An International Journal in Behavioural and Cognitive Neuroscience

Peer Review Policy for Neuropsychologia

The practice of peer review is to ensure that good science is published. It is an objective process at the heart of good scholarly publishing and is carried out on all reputable scientific journals. It is also part of the academic duty, since the reviewer of today is the author of tomorrow and vice versa. Our referees therefore play a vital role in maintaining the high standards of Neuropsychologia and all manuscripts are peer reviewed following the procedure outlined below.

Initial manuscript evaluation The Editor first evaluates all manuscripts. It is rare, but it is entirely feasible for an exceptional manuscript to be accepted at this stage. Those rejected at this stage are usually outside the aims and scope of the journal, but also might be insufficiently original, have serious scientific flaws, or have unintelligible English language. Those that meet the minimum criteria are passed on to at least 2 experts for review.

Authors of manuscripts rejected at this stage will be informed within 7 days of receipt.

Type of Peer Review This journal employs single blind review, where the referee remains anonymous throughout the process.

How the referee is selected Referees are matched to the paper according to their expertise. Our database is constantly being updated. We welcome suggestions for referees from the author though these recommendations may or may not be used.

Referee reports Referees are asked to evaluate whether the manuscript:
- Is original
- Is methodologically sound
- Follows appropriate ethical guidelines
- Has results which are novel, interesting clearly presented and support the conclusions
- The interpretation makes sense vis-a-vis the results and whenever it contradicts common wisdom, the latter is discussed.
- Correctly references previous relevant work

Referees are not expected to correct or copyedit manuscripts. Language correction is not part of the peer review process.

How long does the review process take? Typically the manuscript will be reviewed within 21 days. Should the referees' reports contradict one another or a report is unnecessarily delayed a further expert opinion will be sought. All our referees sign a conflict of interest statement. Revised manuscripts are frequently returned to all or some of the initial referees within 8 weeks. Referees may request more than one revision of a manuscript.

Interim decision Very frequently reviewers suggest changes aimed at improving methodological aspects, and/or the legibility of the manuscript. On the basis of these recommendations the editor may decided to accept, reject or ask for revisions and invite resubmission. In the latter case and interim decision is sent to the authors including the editor emphasis on the required changes and a copy of the reviewers' comments for the author. At this stage the editor may edit the reviews excluding offending sentences and destructive criticism.

Final report A final decision to accept or reject the manuscript will be sent to the author and may include additional comments by the referees.

Editor's Decision is final Referees advise the editor, who is responsible for the final decision to accept or reject the article.

Referees notification The referees have access to all the interim and final decision letters sent to the authors. In some cases the editor may correspond directly with a referee concerning her/his review.
