Chaos, Solitons & Fractals open for new submissions
We are pleased to announce that Prof. Maurice Courbage and Prof. Paolo
Grigolini have taken office as co-Editors-in-Chief of Chaos, Solitons & Fractals: the interdisciplinary journal of Nonlinear
Science, and Nonequilibrium and Complex Phenomena. They are assisted in their editorial duties by a renewed Editorial Board, consisting
of excellent scientists from the different fields covered by the journal.
The appointment of Profs. Courbage and Grigolini marks
a number of changes to the journal, including a refined Aims & Scope, a new layout, and new manuscript types. Furthermore the editorial
process, including submission and peer-review arrangements, has been reviewed. In this announcement we would like to inform you about
these changes and outline our editorial policies.
Chaos, Solitons & Fractals is currently accepting new manuscripts
via the electronic submission system at http://ees.elsevier.com/chaos/.
Aims & Scope
The Aims &
Scope have been narrowed to strengthen the focus and identity of the journal:
"Chaos, Solitons & Fractals aims to be
a leading journal in the interdisciplinary field of Nonlinear Science, and Nonequilibrium and Complex Phenomena. It encourages the submission
of articles on the following subjects in this field: dynamics; non-equilibrium processes in physics, chemistry and geophysics; complex
matter and networks; mathematical models; computational biology; applications to quantum and mesoscopic phenomena; fluctuations and random
processes; self-organization; social phenomena; and engineering. Contributions on both fundamental and applied studies are welcome."
Manuscript types
Chaos, Solitons & Fractals will publish regular articles, letters and reviews, as well
as "Frontiers" papers: concise, up-to-date overviews of a particular field within the scope of the journal. These overviews will highlight
recent developments and outline future challenges. We strive to make these reviews a prime resource for the broad community.
Electronic
submission
We are happy to report that online submission using the Elsevier Editorial System (EES) is now available for Chaos,
Solitons & Fractals at http://ees.elsevier.com/chaos/. This system facilitates communication among editors, reviewers,
and authors, and ensures a rapid and transparent editorial process. Further information on EES may be found at the following URL: http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/onlinesubmission.editors/onlinesubmission
Peer-review policy
Newly submitted manuscripts will first be screened by the co-Editors-in-Chief and
the Managing Editor. Manuscripts may be rejected at this stage if they are of insufficient quality or outside the scope of the journal.
Manuscripts that do meet the minimal requirements for publication are assigned to one of the co-Editors-in-Chief, who sends the manuscript
out for review. Reviewers are selected by the co-Editor-in-Chief on the basis of their expertise, their availability, and such as to
avoid possible conflicts of interest. A reviewer is asked to evaluate whether the manuscript is scientifically sound, original, relevant,
clear, whether it correctly references previous work, and whether it falls within the scope of the journal. The decision to accept or
reject the manuscript, or to ask for a revision, lies with the handling co-Editor-in-Chief.
For a rapid editorial process, reviewers
are asked to review regular papers within 4 weeks, letters and mini-reviews within 3 weeks, and reviews within 8 weeks.
Publication
ethics
As per January, 2008, all Elsevier journals have become members of COPE, the Committee on Publication Ethics. Elsevier's
ethical guidelines and policy directives are described in the Publishing Ethics Resource Kit (PERK), to be found at: http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/editors.editors/Introduction
In keeping with Elsevier's guidelines on potential editorial conflicts of interest, manuscripts (co-)authored by one of the co-Editor-in-Chief
will be handled fully by the other co-Editor-in-Chief in an undisclosed review process. Similar disclosure arrangements are made in the
case of Associate Editors (co-)authoring a manuscript.
Ethical guidelines for authors include disclosure of funding and of any actual
or potential conflict of interest. Please refer to the Guide for Authors for more detail.
Transparency
We are committed
to the quality, efficiency, and transparency of the editorial process. To substantiate this ambition, every year's final volume of Chaos,
Solitons & Fractals will contain an overview of performance indicators, such as the total number of submitted papers and the
rejection ratio.
