April 2009

  • First and Second Prize External link  winners announced in the External link  Elsevier Grand Challenge.  The winning team's project, titled, "Reflect: Automated Annotation of Scientific Terms," won members a prize of $35,000 and recognition for creating the most innovative and implementable prototype for a tool for dealing with the ever-increasing amount of online life sciences information.  Second prize, $15,000, was awarded to for the project, "CORAAL-Dive into Publications, Bathe in the Knowledge,"  to a team from DERI, in Ireland.

  • Elsevier announced External linkthree prize winners in the External linkArticle 2.0 Contest.  First prize was received by Inigo Surguy, who met the challenge of developing a creative and useful solution for rendering journal articles on the web, with his demonstration of how Web 1.0, Web 2.0 and Web 3.0/Semantic web approaches can be combined to add value to an article's content.

  • External linkThe Second Scopus Young Indian Scientist Awards are given to nine outstanding young Indian scientists to inspire the advancement of Indian Science.
  • Elsevier awards Medical Library Association External link$80,000 training grant for librarians in the African, Asian and Latin American continents, enabling Lenny Rhine, University of Florida Librarian Emeritus, to stage eight onsite workshops and one distance learning course for the UN HINARI, AGORA and OARE initiatives.
  • The External linkRICH2007-NIMA Young Scientist Award was awarded during the RICH2007 conference to Federica Sozzi of the Universita' di Trieste for her relevant contributions to the exploitation of the COMPASS-RICH1 detector. Guillaume Lambert was awarded the 'NIMA Young Scientist Award in Free Electron Laser'.

  • Medical Hypotheses, an Elsevier publication, awards Judith Rich-Harris the External link2006 David Horrobin Prize for medical theory for her article, "Parental selection: a third selection process in the evolution of human hairlessness and skin color."

January 2007

  • Sponsored by Elsevier, six young Chinese journalists are awarded the External link2007 AAAS Fellowship for Science Reporters in Developing Regions bringing science writers to the 2007 AAAS Annual Meeting to promote international scientific dialogue, development and coverage.
  • Elsevier and Acta Inc. co sponsor the External link2007 Acta Materialia gold medal award for ability and leadership in materials science. Awarded to Professor Herbert Gleiter, Institute of Nanotechnology, FZK, Germany for his inspired lecture at the opening session entitled ‘Are there Ways to Synthesise Materials Beyond the Limits of Today?’.
