The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2008

 

This year the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was divided between two discoveries of viruses involved in diseases that affect global health. External linkHarald zur Hausen from Germany received one half for his discovery of “human papilloma viruses (HPV) causing cervical cancer” and the other half went jointly to External linkFrancoise Barre-Sinoussi and External linkLuc Montagnier from France for their discovery of “Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)”, the cause of AIDS.

Zur Hausen published most of his highly cited articles in Elsevier journals, and his discovery has ultimately led to the development of prophylactic vaccines against HPV acquisition.
