STRATEGY

Elsevier Strategy

Summary points from YS Chi's address to the editors

Elsevier is made up of two, roughly equal-sized, divisions: 'Science & Technology' and 'Health Sciences'. Journal publishing is our key business, despite some diversification in recent years. We now publish ¼ million peer-reviewed articles per year.

We share your passion for science. We invest in what and how we publish. For example, we invest in electronic platforms for our journals, such as ScienceDirect and the Health Sciences Periodicals platform. The migration from print to online publication (which continues today) has already reduced the relative amount of time researchers spend looking for literature and allows them to focus on the analysis.

The amount and availability of science information is expanding exponentially. Elsevier is committed to providing the productivity tools to manage this information overload.

We take a leading role in sharing information with developing countries, via the initiatives of Research4Life.

Neither publishers nor scholars can build science alone – they are interdependent. We are aware that we are only a support in helping to advance the progress of science, but in this support role we are proud to be a global leader. We strive to work together with you, our editors, to continue to support the Science, Social Science, Technological and Medical research communities.

Journal Strategy

The publishing staff working on your journal set the future journal strategy, in consultation with you and the rest of the Editorial Board, and ensure that it is acted upon. The specific strategy depends on the unique position and focus of your journal. If you would like more information about your journal’s strategy, please ask your publishing contact.

Martin Tanke speaks about Journal strategy in a changing world in Issue 19 of Editors' Update. Sept, 2007.
