POLICIES OF INTEREST TO EDITORS

Access and Dissemination

Elsevier and our partners in the scientific and health communities have a shared interest in encouraging wide access to authoritative, peer-reviewed scientific, technical and medical (STM) information. Disseminating scholarly information is fundamental to our contribution to advancing scientific and medical knowledge, and enabling its use and application.

Elsevier-published research is disseminated globally to an ever-growing range of users by subscription, as well as through a variety of initiatives, to provide access for non-subscribers – including patients, the public, and libraries and institutions in the developing world.

To learn more about Elsevier initiatives to encourage wide access to STM information please visit our section on Access and Dissemination.

Archiving

At Elsevier, we recognize that our journals record the 'minutes of science'. As the keeper of those 'minutes', Elsevier is dedicated to the policies and procedures regarding copyright, archiving and the historic record of the transactions of scholarship.

Through partnerships with the Koninklijke Bibliotheek (the Dutch national library) and Portico, a non-profit archiving agency, Elsevier now maintains two complete, accurate digital versions of all of

Elsevier's journals made available on ScienceDirect. New journals and digitized back files are also included in the archive.

Elsevier continues to explore additional archival arrangements internationally and the inclusion of e-books in our archives.

Copyright

Elsevier strives to maintain a good balance between upholding the integrity of scientific publication and maintaining freedom in scholarly communication. By obtaining exclusive distribution rights for all media, Elsevier can ensure that any article, on paper or online, is an edited, peer-reviewed and accepted version.

Elsevier Journal Authors retain a range of rights with regard to distribution, publishing for scientific advancement, teaching and scholarly communication.

See also our guide for editors on how your authors can use their Elsevier-published articles.

Permissions

Elsevier’s new partnership with the Copyright Clearance Center makes it faster and easier than ever to obtain permission to cite Elsevier materials in scientific papers.

Pricing

For the sixth consecutive year, Elsevier’s average price increase for our journal collection remains within the lowest quartile of average price increases across all STM publishers. Elsevier has contributed to a year-on-year decline in the overall average price escalation in the industry.
