Commitment to the Community
Foundation

As a global scientific and medical publisher, we recognize our profound responsibility to contribute to and serve our professional and non-professional communities. We have built strong partnerships with national and international libraries and educational institutions, nonprofit organizations and other publishers, researchers, healthcare practitioners, faculty, students and policy makers around the world.

We are proud of our role in initiatives that influence how information is reviewed, validated, archived and disseminated. The results of these various collaborations help to foster communication, build insights, and enable individual and collective advancement in scientific research and healthcare.

INFORMATION LINKING: Seamless Linking to the World’s STM Literature

CrossRef™
A publisher-driven initiative, External link  CrossRef is a free reference linking service that provides seamless integration of current and archived content across publishers. Researchers and healthcare professionals can click on a citation and link directly to the target content from any participating publisher platform.

Open URL
Open URL standards address the growing demand for bi-directional interaction between linking systems. ScienceDirect supports the Open URL standard through a partnership with Endeavor’s LinkFinderPlus and SFX. Elsevier is an active participant in the ongoing development of Open URL and participates in the External link  National Information Standards Organization (NISO) committee that is refining the Open URL standard.

INFORMATION SHARING: Bridging the Information Divide

African Virtual University
Elsevier formed an alliance with the External link  African Virtual University (AVU) to provide mathematicians and physicists in sub-Saharan African with access to ScienceDirect. Students and researchers at AVU partner institutions will also gain access to a digital library with online academic literature and links to international libraries.

INFORMATION PRESERVATION: The Digital Library

Digital Archives
Working with Yale University Library and the national library in the Netherlands, External link  Koninklijke Bibliotheek (KB), we’ve confirmed key archival principles, including the need to adopt the Open Archival Information System (OASIS) standards for preservation systems. The KB holds the first official digital archive of Elsevier journals to ensure the information we publish is available and accessible in perpetuity.

TULIP (The University Licensing Program)
In cooperation with nine leading US universities, Elsevier established the TULIP project, which tested the technical feasibility, economic viability and usage patterns of networked delivery to and use of journals at the desktop. Findings provided valuable insight on the digital library, its development and future impact on universities, users and publishers.

INFORMATION GROWTH: Advancing Science Education & Research

The Elsevier Foundation
External link  The Elsevier Foundation offers grants and contributions to organizations, youth development and literacy programs that advance science education, vital research and scholarly thinking.
