Benjamin Clark

Benjamin Clark is Marketing Communications Manager, ScienceDirect, based at the Elsevier headquarters in Amsterdam. Born in York, England, Ben now lives in Amsterdam. He shared some thoughts with us about his work at Elsevier.

1. What does your job entail?

I am responsible for ScienceDirect internal and external communications. That includes managing the ScienceDirect Info site (external), Non Solus intranet site and two e-newsletters: ScienceDirect Connect, which is aimed at librarians and the A&G Bulletin, which is internally focussed. Press releases and brand communication are also in my remit. I am trying to deliver concise, customer-focussed information that is well structured, clear and easy to read. I'm looking at usage information in order to further tailor information to the needs of my audience. I'm also starting to get involved in projects, one of which is my idea for a new ScienceDirect product.

2. How would you describe the main challenge of your job?

Getting people to read what I deliver is the main challenge. The growth of the Internet as a medium for communication has led to an information overload that I would argue has lessened concentration spans and forced people to be even more selective about what they read.

3. What does working at Elsevier mean to you?

I believe in what we do. As a leading STM publisher, Elsevier is well positioned to continue to have a significant impact across the broad world of science; what we publish directly affects lives in a positive way and I'm glad to be a part of that.
