IT Service Management - Fifteen years
Prior to working for Elsevier, I worked in administration for a head-hunting firm and then travelled the world for two years. I actually started here in a temporary secretarial role, one that quickly became permanent. When Elsevier merged with Reed, I moved into the IT department despite having no specific experience - though I had done a night class in teaching IT.
So I started my IT career as a Trainee Helpdesk Analyst and Trainer. Once fully qualified, I moved over to the Network & Desktop Team as a Desktop Support Analyst, designing and implementing new systems. I continued studying and, after qualifying in Novell, took on the role of Team Leader. It was hard but enjoyable work - but nothing compared to becoming a mother for the first time.
Following another restructure and attainment of Microsoft qualifications, I returned to the office in the new role of Senior Systems Engineer, working four days a week. I quickly progressed to Desktop Manager, and then moved into my current role as Configuration Manager.
Today, my core responsibilities revolve around understanding relationships between IT hardware and services/systems. This information is then used to assess the impact and risk of changes to the IT environment. Essentially, this underpins our ability to maintain a stable and reliable service, and maximise uptime. It’s really challenging, not least because it’s a new role - I’m shaping the way I work as I go along.
Initially, it was the opportunities that kept me here, but I have to say Elsevier’s flexible attitude towards my hours is equally impressive with the added bonus of homeworking when I need it. Another big pull is the like-minded people who work here and the fact your opinion is listened to. I’m a member of the staff council and I’m on the Employer Opinion Survey action team for the Computer Centre. As well as developing a better understanding of the business, I’ve got my teeth into the big issues that affect us. I’m speaking up for colleagues I have real respect for - improving our IT management processes and the like. It’s a great honour and one I treasure highly.
