Global Infrastructure Development - Nine years

You could say I’ve moved around a bit to get where I am today. After completing a BSc in Physics and an MSc in IT systems, I started my career in the Middle East as part of a desert-based oil exploration crew. I then moved to Fujitsu to work with the department of health. There, I gained a real insight into Oracle technologies, and continued in the same vein by joining Elsevier as an Oracle DBA. At the time, I’d never heard of Elsevier, although I was aware of Reed as a company. It was the technology that really attracted me, and the prospect of moving into online products.

Over the next seven years, I progressed to Senior, and then Lead Oracle DBA - partnering with Oracle Consulting and working on the design, build and ongoing support of our electronic warehouse. To keep pace with technology, I completed numerous external training courses, and developed as a manager and presenter through our internal programmes. In 2005, I took on my current role in Global Infrastructure Development.

I manage a team of eight, and together we’re constantly refining the systems that supply our books and journals to the market. We also get involved in our suite of online tools, which help our authors to monitor and update their articles.

Simply put, our team strives to develop quicker and better quality information for the public and everyone at Elsevier. And being an information-led business, IT is the hub of everything we do. We’re one of the largest global information companies - so there aren’t many better places to hone your IT skills. Plus, Elsevier’s attitude to flexible working is great, especially as I have a young family.
