Book Review

Campbell-Walsh Urology, 9th Edition (E-dition)
Editors: AJ Wein, LR Kavoussi, AC Novick, AW Partin and CA Peters
Philadelphia, Elsevier, 2007, 4592 pp. #375. ISBN 9781416029663

For two principle reasons, namely lack of space and reputation of the text, it is a daunting task to review this latest manifestation of the universally acclaimed ?bible' of urology. Since its first publication in 1954, this reference source has become an increasingly important and referred to text. In recognition of the 20-year editorial
career of renowned urologist Patrick Walsh, which spanned the four previous editions of the text, this new edition has been re-titled Campbell-Walsh Urology. In this 9th edition, however, change has not solely been reserved for the title as the publication offers the reader amuch fresher and more visually appealing text than ever
before.

At its heart, Campbell-Walsh Urology is a very straightforward text. It comprises four volumes (running to a total of almost 4000 pages) and is generously illustrated with anatomical drawings, radiological images, photographs and multiple summarizing algorithms and tables, the majority of which are in full colour. The broad content of the four volumes is summarized as follows.

Volume 1: Anatomy, cellular biology, essentials in clinical decision making, infection, male reproductive dysfunction, neoplasms in the male genitalia, and sexual dysfunction
in men and women.

Volume 2: Renal physiology and issues in the upper urinary tract and adrenal glands, including renal failure, stone disease and trauma; and neoplasms of the upper urinary tract.

Volume 3: Urine transport, storage and emptying; bladder disease and management,
including an extensive section on bladder cancer; prostate disease both benign and neoplastic.

Volume 4: This is a 900 page textbook detailing the major and minor aspects of paediatric urological disease assessment and management.

An additional new feature is the introduction of Key Points figures throughout the text, drawing attention to essential elements within the text. This is a very welcome
new device as it helps the reader from becoming overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information presented. The volume and depth of information presented over the four volumes raise a very interesting question as to just how useful Campbell-Walsh Urology
is to a nursing audience. Over recent years, a gradual increase in the sophistication of urological nursing intervention throughout the globe has been noted in many countries. This increase has, in turn, created the need for a deeper understanding of urological disease process and the evidence-based interventions that would address them.

As a source to provide such authoritative and trusted information Campbell-Walsh
Urology is pre-eminent and possibly unique. Undoubtedly, some of the information is at a level that is presently not required by nurses, and this can mean that the text can be somewhat intimidating. However, to be put off by this would be to miss the point of Campbell-Walsh Urology entirely. The volumes provide what the reader needs them to provide, from basic information on anatomy and physiology to in-depth debate and
discussion on major and minor aspects of urological disease management and the attendant controversies that accompany so many areas of care. So long as the
reader approaches the text to take from it what they need, then it will always deliver a thorough grounding in the topic of interest. This attitude was summed up recently when a colleague suggested that there are times when one needs reliable and well-presented information on an aspect of urological care and one does not have the time to source multiple journals on the matter. In such cases, my colleague suggested that
Campbell-Walsh Urology really is useful.

The 9th edition is available as an e-Edition that includes a fully searchable online version of the four volumes and that offers downloadable images and video clips. Reflecting the fact that urological knowledge is developing rapidly, the editors have ensured that the website also offers weekly content updates, all of which are available to the reader for the life of the edition. This commitment to ensuring that the materials available through the publication is an excellent feature and when allied to the downloadable materials means that any practitioner medical or nursing, who is involved in teaching, can ensure that their materials and presentations are always current.

In short, Campbell-Walsh Urology, 9th edition, is a treasured clinical resource. The full e-Edition is expensive; however, it should be remembered that when made available as a resource to groups of nurses, it becomes a very economical source of up-todate,
cutting edge clinical information. If you work in an area where education is valued and where nursing interest is keen, then the question is not really if you can afford to have the book, but rather if you can afford not to have it, Campbell-Walsh Urology really is that good.
