Here is a completely new concept - in fact it?s so new, no-one seems to know what to call it! It?s clearly not a book although it does
have pages. It resembles the sort of thing you might get from a furniture manufacturer showing different colours of leather or a decorating
company showing the range of paint colours. After much consideration, I have decided to call it a picture swatch. It has been compiled
by five dermatologists from Dartmouth Medical School, New Hampshire, USA.
It fits snugly into its semi-rigid protective cardboard box
and you can either keep it in a drawer at work or on your desk but is rather too bulky for your pocket measuring 25cm x 6.5cm x 3.5cm.
It consists of more than eighty bookmark sized shiny cards fastened together with a metal bolt, each with four colour photographs on
one side and on the other side, the description, history, physical findings and treatment of the condition shown.
You can look through
the cards very quickly as they fan out easily just like a deck of cards would. Besides, the cards are all numbered and colour coded;
for example the eczema pictures have purple numbers, the urticaria pictures have lime green numbers and so on. The contents at the front
of the swatch lists each card, so you can quickly find exactly what you?re looking for.
The photos are, almost without exception, of
excellent quality and extremely lifelike. The descriptions are nice and pithy. The treatments are thankfully mentioned by generic name
as well as by brand although some are not available in the UK. At the bottom of each card are the differential diagnoses (DDx) of each
rash – for instance the differential diagnoses of card 139 (extramammary Paget?s disease) are card 37 (psoriasis), card 70 (Candidiasis
of large skin folds) and card 129 (Bowen?s disease).
One memorable statistic is that about 20% of consultations in General Practice
have a dermatological element so the need for a compact yet comprehensive and readable compilation of common dermatological conditions
is paramount. For just over half the cost of filling my car with petrol you could be the proud owner of this little beauty. Get yours
