Preface & Foreword
These two volumes contain selected papers presented at the International Biohydrometallurgy Symposium - IBS 2001, held in Ouro Preto, Brazil, on September 16-19, 2001. Building on the successes of the previous meetings, the 14th symposium of the IBS series provided an international forum for scientific and engineering experts and students to address the progress and applications of Biohydrometallurgy as it enters the new millennium.

The response to the call for papers has been most gratifying. The authors of the papers in these volumes represent countries scattered through five continents. This is a reflection of the international effort being expended to advance the theory and practice of Biohydrometallurgy.
The program of the Symposium encompassed 6 sessions covering a range of topics related to Biohydrometallurgy: "The Scientific Knowledge for Technology and Sustainable Development". These sessions were:
Bioleaching Advances in Fundamentals and Mechanisms
Bioleaching and Microorganisms: Physiology, Biochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology
Bioleaching Operations
Bioleaching of Metals from Wastes and Sludges
Biosorption and Bioaccumulation
Bioremediation- Fundamentals and Applications
Analytical Techniques applied to Biohydrometallurgy
Biogeochemistry

Within these topics there was evidence of much progress in understanding the bioleaching processes and applying new ideas to commercial applications. The increasing role of biohydrometallurgical processes in reducing the environmental impact of industrial activities was also apparent. The technical contributions were presented mostly in poster sessions, with few oral presentations. A panel, with an overview highlighting the main contributions, opened each poster session. The technical program was complemented by round tables where "Molecular biology and its contribution to Biohydrometallurgy", "Education and training in Biohydrometallurgy" and "What is next-challenges and opportunities" were discussed.

We wish to express our appreciation to the members of the International Scientific Committee Ricardo Amils, Antonio Ballester, Robert Blake, Klaus Bosecker, James A. Brierley, Corale Brierley, Francisco C. Mora, Patrick D'Hughes, Edgardo Donati, John Duncan, Henry Ehrlich, Jean Frenay, Stoyan Groudev, Eric Guibal, Ralph Hackl, Geoff Hansford, Grigorii Karavaiko, David Holmes, Carlos A. Jerez, Barrie Johnson, E. Börje Lindström, K.A. Natarajan, Paul R. Norris, Kishore M. Paknikar, Douglas Rawlings, Francisco F. Roberto, Giovanni Rossi, Jorge Rúbio, Wolfgang Sand, Tsuyoshi Sugio, Helmut Tributsh, Mario Tsezos, Olli H. Tuovinen, Tomás Vargas, Bohumil Volesky for selecting and reviewing the 150 manuscripts submitted to the IBS-2001. The high technical standard of the event should be credited to their important collaboration. Acknowledgements are due to all those who collaborated in the organization of the Conference as well as all the authors and participants. The dedication of the Associate Editors Mônica Teixeira, Patrícia Pimentel and Regina Pinto de Carvalho and the collaboration of Juliana Rocha Freitas in the organization of these volumes is deeply appreciated. On behalf of the Organizing Committee, the editors wish to thank to the sponsors, currently represented by: Anglo Gold, Companhia Vale do Rio Doce-CVRD, Mineração São Bento and Ferteco Mineração, Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq, Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de Minas Gerais- Fapemig and Ministério de Ciência e Tecnologia - MCT. Without their support the organization of the Symposium, held by the first time in Brazil, would not have been possible.

Finally, the Editors hope that these volumes provide not only an invaluable record of the recent progress but also become a basis for further advance in this exciting interdisciplinary field of Biohydrometallurgy.
