Professor C.R. Rao celebrates his 80th Birthday.
In March 16-19, invited guests joined together to attend the International Conference - Statistics: Reflections on the Past, Visions for the Future - held in honor of Professor C.R. Rao's 80th Birthday. It was Elsevier Science's added pleasure and privilege to have the opportunity to host a reception in celebration of this occasion.


C.R. Rao is one of the world leaders in statistics whose pioneering contributions brought statistical theory to maturity and made the 20-th century the statistical century. A former Director of the Indian Statistical Institute and holder of the Jawaharlal Nehru Chair, a prestigious National Professorship in India, he is currently Professor and holder of the Eberly Chair in Statistics and Director of the Center for Multivariate Analysis at the Pennsylvania State University in the USA.

C.R. Rao has Ph.D. and Sc.D. degrees from Cambridge University, and has been awarded 23 honorary doctorate degrees from 14 different countries in the world. He is the recipient of numerous medals, including the Guy Medal in Silver of the Royal Statistical Society, S.S. Wilks Medal of the American Statistical Association, Mahalanobis Birth Centenary Gold Medal of the Indian Science Congress and the J.C. Bose Gold Medal of Bose Institute. Recently, he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from the Department of Statistics, Athens University of Economics and Business, for his outstanding contribution to Statistics and to Society, internationally. During his stay in Athens, Prof. Rao taught a course entitled: "Linear Methods: Past, Present and Future" in the distinguished Professor series of the Graduate Programme of the Department. He is the author of 14 books and about 400 research papers. Some of the statistical tools developed by him, which bear his name and are incorporated in standard books on statistics, are Cramer-Rao inequality, Rao-Blackwell theorem, Fisher-Rao theorem, Kagan-Linnik-Rao theorem, Rao's distance, score tests, damage model, orthogonal arrays, generalized inverse of matrices, paradoxes in statistical inference and F-approximation to the likelihood ratio criterion.

C.R. Rao has been the President of the International Statistical Institute, the International Biometric Society and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics. His academic awards include Fellowship of the Royal Society (UK), the American Academy of Arts and Science and the Indian National Science Academy, Membership of the National Academy of Sciences (USA) and Foreign Member of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences. Besides Fellowships and Honorary Fellowships of numerous learned societies.

C.R. Rao has been the Chief Editor of Sankhya and Multivariate Analysis for a number of years and is now on the editorial board of numerous journals in statistics. He is a scholar with wide interests which led him to explore and demonstrate the use of statistics in all branches of human knowledge in science, arts and literature.
