Description
For biomedical and pharmacological librarians, searching scientific literature
can be complicated. Elsevier, producer of the renowned
EMBASE database,
has drawn on more than 30 years of experience indexing the world's
biomedical and pharmacological literature to create
this sophisticated EMTREE
drug and disease thesaurus.
EMTREE provides a powerful tool to classify the content of biomedical
information
in a structured way that facilitates comprehensive searching and
high precision retrieval by database users.
EMTREE 2006 currently
comprises 52,500 preferred terms of which more than
25,000 are drugs and chemicals, and 210,000 synonyms with almost 133,000
drugs and
chemicals. The 2006 edition incorporates several enhancements, such as the addition of
2,637 preferred terms. Examples of new preferred
terms are 'belimumab'
'solabegron' and 'ischemic preconditioning'.
This three-volume set is an indispensable tool for both novice and
experienced
searchers.
The EMTREE Life Science Thesaurus is only available as a three volume set and
includes:
Volume 1: Alphabetical
Index (1252 pages)
This lists all medical and drug terms, with their EMTREE codes which function
as entry points for Volume 2.
Also included are an extensive "how to use"
section in English, a list of all new terms added in 2006, drug and disease
links, and scope
notes for some 50 frequently used terms.
Volume 2: Tree Structure (1344 pages)
This is the hierarchical list in which EMTREE
terms are arranged in 15 facets,
from Anatomy and Organisms, through Disease and Drugs to Geographical
Aspects of Healthcare. It provides
valuable and essential support for
"explosion" searches.
Volume 3: Permuted Term Index (1232 pages)
This volume provides
an index to every word (other than single digits and
letters) contained in EMTREE Volume 1. It is an invaluable aid for finding terms
if you are unsure of the correct word order or simply for browsing.
