Consolidated Library Edition in Five Volumes Published under the auspices of the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law
Edited by
R. Bernhardt, Max-Planck-Institut für öffentliches Recht und Völkerrecht, Im Neuenheimer Feld 535, D-69120 Heidelberg, Germany
Description
This Encyclopedia of Public International Law is published under the auspices of the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and
International Law, Heidelberg, Germany. It contains some 5,800 pages with approximately 1,300 articles on all important international
legal problems and institutions as well as the major decisions of international courts and tribunals. This outstanding scholarly undertaking
involves more than 460 specialist authors world-wide.
The initial edition, published between 1981 and 1990 and now out of print,
consisted of twelve instalments, each containing, on average, over 100 articles on a specific subject area. The present Consolidated
Library Edition consists of five volumes. Volumes I-IV list all articles arranged alphabetically, with supplementary notes and new bibliographical
references, as necessary. Volume V contains comprehensive indexes and lists.
International law covers several areas of paramount
interest to all mankind, including the clashes of interest between powerful entities - States - and the attempts to resolve those conflicts
through law. The Encyclopedia presents the rules according to which the affairs of nations in peace and war are governed; the development
of bonds of cooperation, especially today in the form of international organizations; and the existing controls and the controversial
new frontiers of the regulation of the use of natural resources, including the sea, the air and even space.
The Encyclopedia is not
only a solid scholarly work of reference for the diplomat or practitioner far from a comprehensive international legal library, or for
the scholar who wishes to look up a specific point quickly and to find a concise answer to a question, but also a source of information
and education for the general reader who wishes to read concise and well-written articles contributed by leading experts in their fields.
It offers the interrelated whole of present international law presented in a great number of high quality subject articles which complement
each other.
