Elsevier has initiated a beta test program, Patient Research, to give patients, family members and caregivers access, for a minimal processing fee, to medical articles that might help them better understand their health issues. 30 journals covering different medical fields are testing this approach to provide a public service and help assess the level of public demand for medical information. 

Through this initiative when a patient, family member or caregiver searches the internet on topics relevant to a patient’s condition and search results link to articles in participating Elsevier medical journals, the individual may register to request email delivery of the article.
