Introduction
elsarticle.cls is Elsevier's new document class for typeset journal articles. It is now accepted for submitted articles, both in Elsevier's electronic submission system and elsewhere.
For the time being, authors submitting their article via the electronic submission system should include, with their manuscript, the class file elsarticle.cls and any bibliographic style files from the elsarticle package that are used in the manuscript. |
Elsevier's previous document class for typeset articles, elsart.cls, is now over 10 years old. It has been replaced with the new, state-of-the-art document class elsarticle.cls, written for Elsevier by the leading TeX developer River Valley Technologies.
elsarticle.cls is based upon the standard LaTeX document class article.cls. It uses natbib.sty for bibliographical references.
Bugs and problems with elsarticle.cls may be reported to the developers of the class via elsarticle@river-valley.com.

The previous journal document class, elsart, is no longer being maintained but is available for reference here. It may still be used for submissions; however, we do encourage all authors and editors to use elsarticle in preference.

| Class options
elsarticle provides a number of options that allow formatting of the text in different ways according to what is required. The main options are listed below:
-
preprint - default option yielding a standard manuscript format
-
review - as preprint but with extra interline space for use in the review process
-
1p - formats according to the look and feel of Elsevier's model 1+ journals (always single-column style). Elsevier's journals use a set of standard layouts numbered 1+–6+. For some of the layouts we provide a class option, called Np, where N is the number of the layout. Please ask the editorial office of the journal which layout is suitable for your particular submission
-
3p - formats according to the look and feel of Elsevier's model 3+ journals (see above). This may be one- or two-column style; for two-column declare an additional twocolumn option
-
5p - formats according to the look and feel of Elsevier's model 5+ journals (see above; always two-column style)
-
authoryear - name-year citation
-
number - numbered citation
In addition to this, all the options available with the standard article.cls document class are also available with elsarticle.
For the full list of package options please consult the user documentation.
