Amsterdam, 04 June 2009 – Six Elsevier journals are among the top 20 journals in their field according to the Times Higher Education (THE), a weekly publication that covers higher education. The following journals were among the top performers according to the THE’s ranking of Computer Science Journals:
Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics,
Computer Vision and Understanding,
Computer-Aided
Design,
Computers & Chemical Engineering,
Environmental Modelling & Software, and
Journal of Computer and System Sciences
"We are delighted to see Elsevier's titles recognized in this way - it reflects our ongoing commitment to launching and building rigorous, timely, and innovative journals in computer science," said Ann Gabriel, Publishing Director of Computer Science.
Based on a decade’s worth of data, Elsevier computer science titles occupy a third of the spots in THE’s “Top journals in computer science” list, with Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering and Computer Vision and Image Understanding both cracking the top ten. Thejournals were ranked according to citations per paper based on data provided by Thomson Reuters’ Essential Science Indicators database for the period from January 1998 until December 2008.
Times Higher Education Deputy Editor Phil Baty says that ranking journals in terms of citations is highly controversial, but he maintains that impact measures cannot be ignored. “Bibliometrics are a major and growing part of the research scene internationally. In the UK, they have taken on particular importance, because they will be used in the future to help judge the quality of academics’ research in the forthcoming Research Excellence Framework”.
It is the dedication to research excellence of the individual journal communities that Senior Vice President of S&T PublishingDavid Clark credits for the Computer Science catalog’s success. "We congratulate our editors and reviewers on their work and commitment to these titles over the years,” commented Clark. “It is great to see their work, and that of our communities of authors, so publicly recognized.”
