Amsterdam, August 22, 2007 – Elsevier, the leading publisher of
scientific, technical and medical information and producer of EMBASE,
announces that agreements have been signed with both Thomson Scientific and
Wolters Kluwer Health to host the new
EMBASE
Classic bibliographic database on DataStar, Dialog, Ovid and SilverPlatter
beginning fall 2007. This EMBASE Classic release will mark the first time that
the EMBASE backfile from 1947-1973 will be accessible in electronic form. It
will enable institutions to obtain perpetual access to this important body of
information. To celebrate the upcoming release of EMBASE Classic, an
introductory pre-launch sales offer is currently available.
"With EMBASE Classic, researchers will have access to the early literature on
the market-leading Ovid platform that is so critical to understanding major
developments in their field. This continues to fulfill the commitment of
Wolters Kluwer Health to provide librarians with comprehensive information in
important subject areas to support the research needs of their institution,"
said Scott MacFarland, Vice President of Content Management at Wolters Kluwer
Health. "Our EMBASE implementation features industry-leading functionality of
the EMTREE thesaurus, enabling researchers to quickly locate the precise
information they need. EMBASE Classic will be an excellent addition and is the
kind of offering our customers have come to expect from Ovid." EMBASE Classic
will be available on both the Ovid Gateway and SilverPlatter WebSPIRS
platforms.
"Thomson Scientific understands the vital need for archive data to enhance
search and analysis capabilities, and the upcoming release of the EMBASE
Classic database is sure to accelerate biomedical and pharmacological research
efforts worldwide," said Geoffrey Dick, Director, Publisher Management,
Thomson Scientific. "Combined with other archive data recently added to Dialog
and DataStar, including BIOSIS and Zoological Record, EMBASE Classic will
provide greater context for current and future research. We are pleased that
we will soon be able to offer this valuable content to our Dialog and DataStar
customers."
Amanda Spiteri, Director of Elsevier's Pharmaceutical Development Group,
commented that, "Because this year marks the 60th anniversary of EMBASE, it
makes it particularly gratifying to launch EMBASE Classic at this time,
enabling today’s researchers to look back at critical research that has paved
the way for advancements in science and medicine. We are very pleased to have
reached agreements with two of the major online vendors."
EMBASE Classic is a fully digitized 27-year backfile that is drawn from 43
Excerpta Medica Abstract Journal print titles and includes more than 1.8
million bibliographic records of articles published in 3,000 international
biomedical and pharmacological titles.
EMTREE, Elsevier's Life Science Thesaurus, has been implemented across the
file for precision retrieval. The thesaurus contains over 52,000 preferred
