Singapore, October 18, 2005 Elsevier, the world-leading scientific and medical publisher, has announced a new publishing partnership with the Asia Oceania Association for the Study of Obesity (AOASO). As of 2006 Elsevier will publish a new journal, Obesity Research & Clinical Practice.
Obesity Research & Clinical Practice will be Elsevier's first journal on research and practices in obesity and the AOASO aims to develop an international journal highlighting the global growing problem of obesity and specific regional problems.
Asia Oceania Association for the Study of Obesity Chairman Professor Ian Caterson said: I am delighted that we have been able to publish such a journal. Obesity is, and will be an increasing problem especially in our region of Asia & Oceania. It is important to be able to publish strong scientific studies on the aetiology, effects and management of obesity. We want this journal to be a leader in obesity research and practice.
The Editors of Obesity Research & Clinical Practice, Professors Gary Wittert and Shuji Inoue are extremely pleased to tackle the challenge of ensuring that a journal of high scientific quality will be both regionally applicable and internationally relevant. Given the increasing burden of obesity in the Asia Pacific region, and the devastating personal and economic consequences it is appropriate that the new publication exposes health care practitioners, clinical researchers, basic scientists, epidemiologists, and public health officials in the region to all areas of obesity research and practice. Asian populations are especially vulnerable to obesity and obesity-associated diseases. Levels of BMI, waist circumference and extent of visceral obesity associated with significant risk are lower in Asians than in other population groups, while the prevalence of Type ? diabetes mellitus are higher and consequence such as diabetic nephropathy more frequent. In addition, Micronesians generally have a higher percentage of subcutaneous body fat while modernized eating habits and increasing visceral fat have resulted in explosions of type ? diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. The epidemic of obesity in the Asia-Oceania region is a major concern compounded by specific regional population-based and genetic issues. AOASO is delighted to announce the launch of The Journal of Obesity Research and Clinical Practice to be published by the world's leader in electronic delivery, in order to ensure rapid delivery to the widest possible audience.
