The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2006

Eukaryotic transcription is the process through which the genetic information encoded in DNA is copied into messenger RNA (mRNA). The resulting strands of mRNA act as recipes for the synthesis of proteins. The field of transcription originated nearly 50 years ago, when the activity of an RNA polymerase-the enzyme which produces RNA from DNA-was first measured in rats.

Early research then turned primarily to the study of transcription in relatively simpler prokaryotes, or bacteria. It was Nobel laureate Roger Kornberg who unlocked the more complicated process of transcription and transcriptional control in eukaryotic cells, whose genomes are housed within distinct nuclei. In the 1970s, Kornberg discovered the nucleosome which is the protein complex packaging chromosomal DNA (usually known as "Chromatin") in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells.

He then uncovered other essential players governing the transcription process, including "Mediator", a multi-protein complex that relays signals from transcription factors to the transcribing enzyme, RNA polymerase II. He later captured the first crystallographic pictures of the dynamic transcription machinery. Those molecular -level images revealed the growth of an mRNA strand, and further elucidated the role of key players in the process.
