The importance of biostatistics is being felt more right now than ever before due to its widespread biomedical applications ranging from medical image processing to biomarker detection and drug discovery. Many people believe that we have entered the age of biology as evident from the publication trends of the leading scientific journals.
Biostatistics is also well positioned to lend itself to collaborative disciplines such as bioinformatics. Novel statistical methods are being developed to deal with huge amounts of data generated from various high-throughput omics experiments.
Elsevier statistics journals have been fairly consistent in promoting publications in these areas. This virtual issue presents a collection of twenty papers published in four Elsevier journals in the last three years. These papers represent methodological advances in Clinical Trials, Does Response, Gene Expression Analysis, Medical Image Processing, Pattern Recognition, Proteomics, Statistical Genetics, and Survival Analysis.
We hope that the readers of this virtual issue will enjoy reading these papers and will look forward to future papers in biostatistics and statistical bioinformatics in these journals. In particular, under the new editorship of H. Koul and me, Statistics & Probability Letters hopes to publish a greater number of letters style papers in biostatistics and statistical bioinformatics.
