Acta Biomaterialia Gold Medal 2009

Acta Materialia, Inc. is pleased to announce that the recipient of the 2009 Acta Biomaterialia Gold Medal Award is Dr. Buddy D. Ratner, Professor of Bioengineering and Chemical Engineering at the University of Washington.  The Award recognizes excellence in the research and the practice of biomaterials.

Professor Ratner’s seminal explorations of biosurfaces and biomaterials/tissue interactions as applied to tissue engineering, understanding biocompatibility and developing medical products have profoundly contributed to the advancement of biomedical science and technology.  His record of over 400 scholarly works, over 18 issued patents and extensive leadership in education, academic and professional service has resulted in many awards and honors over his distinguished forty year career.

Professor Ratner will formally receive his award at the 2009 meeting of the European Society for Biomaterials in Lausanne, Switzerland, on September 11, and will present a plenary talk entitled: “Biocompatibility Vitalized: The Paradigm Shifts in Healing and Regeneration.”

Acta Biomaterialia Gold Medal 2008

Acta Materialia Inc. is pleased to announce that Professor Robert Langer of MIT is the first recipient of the Acta Biomaterialia Gold Medal Award, which recognizes excellence in the research and practice of biomaterials.

Working at the interface of biotechnology and materials science, with a focus on the development of polymers in drug delivery, Professor Langer is a world leader in the field of biomaterials who has numerous presentations, patents and academic achievements to his credit.

Professor Langer will formally receive the Acta Biomaterialia Gold Medal at the Fall 2008 Materials Research Society Conference, which coincides with a special Symposium in Honor of his 60thbirthday. Please join us in congratulating Professor Langer on this award.

Acta Biomaterialia

Acta Materialia, Inc. and its journal Acta Biomaterialia are pleased to announce the Acta Biomaterialia Gold Medal Award to recognize excellence in research and development in the field of biomaterials. With this annual award we look forward to establishing a tradition of excellence that will recognize outstanding accomplishments of investigators in the growing international biomaterials community. The Acta Biomaterialia Gold Medal Award will consist of the gold medal, a plaque, a cash honorarium and payment of travel expenses related to the award ceremony.

We invite nominations from the biomaterials science community for the next Acta Biomaterialia Gold Medal Award. The awardee should be an undisputed world leader in the field of biomaterials, whose accomplishments in discovery and translation to practice are surpassing and known to all in the field. Nominations should consist of the nominee’s curriculum vitae and a letter of nomination. Seconding nomination letters are recommended, but are not essential. The selection process will be conducted by an international panel of distinguished judges and a suitable presentation venue will be arranged for the following year.

Acta Materialia, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to disseminating the knowledge of science and engineering of materials, primarily by publishing high quality journals covering the areas of materials science, biomaterials, materials engineering, and materials chemistry and physics. The corporation publishes three journals in collaboration with Elsevier: Acta Materialia, Scripta Materialia, and Acta Biomaterialia.
