One of the major expectations on nanomedicines is the improved delivery of notoriously ‘‘difficult” compounds across the bodie's various biological barriers in order to achieve higher bioavailabilities at the target site and to reduce side effects. This special issue of EJPB compiles some selected papers of the 7th International Conference and Workshop (‘‘Cellcourse”) on Biological Barriers and Nanomedicine – Advanced Drug Delivery and Predictive non-vivo Testing Technologies, which took place during 20–29 February 2008 at Saarland University,Saarbrücken, Germany. You will find both timely reviews and original research papers, dealing with new fundamental biopharmaceutical insights, timely laboratory methods and novel delivery technologies.
Besides gene delivery and imaging applications of new nanomedicines, special emphasis is given on skin and pulmonary drug delivery.

"Drug release is the result of a complex interplay between the drug, its carrier, and the release environment. Fascinating strategies are under development or are currently investigated to optimise the drug product to provide a time and spatial controlled release. However, many of these novel strategies have not met the expectations..." Read the full editorial here
