Volume 1810, Issue 10, Pages 913-1006 (October 2011)

In this special issue of BBA General Subjects, we will give an overview of the field of Microbial Systems Biology. You will find contribution from leading scientists from both theoretical and experimental disciplines discussing recent developments and future perspectives. Like the stimulating Systems Biology of Microorganisms meeting in Paris that constitute its basis, this special issue aims for a comprehensive reflection of the field that will stimulate, enlighten and inspire both old and new system biologists.

Marcus Krantz

Marcus Krantz received his PhD in Microbiology at the University of Gothenburg 2005 after studying the signal transduction underlying the osmotic stress response in yeast. Thereafter, he moved to the Systems Biology Institute in Tokyo to work on robustness analysis and mapping of signal transduction pathways. Marcus returned to the University of Gothenburg 2008 before moving to the Humboldt University in Berlin 2010. He maintains his interest in signal transduction and the challenge in visualisation and analysis of complex networks.

Stefan Hohmann

Stefan Hohmann was born 1956 in Darmstadt, Germany, where he studied microbiology and genetics. Following his PhD he worked as project leader in Leuven, Belgium, and as visiting professor in Bloemfontein, South Africa. Since 1996 he is group leader and since 2001 professor in molecular microbial physiology at the University of Gothenburg. Present research is driven by a team of about 10 scientists and covers regulatory processes in signal transduction and metabolism. In addition Stefan engages in developing Systems Biology. Stefan has published more than 100 research papers and more than 30 reviews and other publications. He coordinates three EC projects and is chief editor of Molecular Genetics and Genomics, Current Genetics and Topics in Current Genetics. Stefan is presently Pro-Dean of the Science Faculty (in charge of research and research infrastructure) and chairman of the Swedish Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
