Screening for technical standards Before papers are passed to peer reviewers, Elsevier screens them to ensure they are of sufficient quality and that they adhere to the Guide for Authors. Papers that do not meet this minimum technical standard will be returned to the submitting author(s), along with a checklist of missing or insufficient items. Authors will be able to resubmit once they have addressed these technical insufficiencies.

Authors are eligible to receive CiteAlert notifications if their article has been indexed by  Scopus, the largest citation database of research literature. Please note, self-citations are not included. An example of a CiteAlert notification can be found here.

CiteAlert is a quick and effective way of being kept up to date with the latest citations made to any article you have published since 2005 (as long as the journal that published your article is indexed by Scopus). CiteAlert also ensures you are aware of new articles related to your research.

Responding to constructive criticism

We take author feedback very seriously. Here's a look at a few of the initiatives and improvements that came from listening to our authors:

Improving publication time

 "I was dismayed when after the rapid review, revision, acceptance, proof page, and online publication, that the actual article was delayed for so long."

Authors have identified the speed of publication as a major concern. Article-based publishing makes the article available online much quicker. Authors no longer have to wait for the compilation of the journal issue itself.

We have also made it a priority in recent years to clear out any backlog of unpublished accepted articles, often increasing the number of pages per issue in order to do so. New procedures, including Article-based publishing, ensure that backlogs do not build up again.

Improving the submission process

Authors have also informed us of their frustration when having spent valuable time formatting and submitting their paper to a journal, it is then rejected due to it being out of scope, or not suitable for the journal.

"As mentioned earlier, I am not sure I agree with the fact that a large number of manuscripts simply don't get reviewed. From an author's standpoint, it is a waste of time to submit to such a Journal because even if the paper is rejected from other journals, at the very least, we are able to get peer-review comments."

In 2011, Elsevier launched the Article Transfer Service, to tackle this exact problem. If a paper is out of scope for one journal, the editor can recommend it be suitable to transfer. The author will then have the added option to transfer their manuscript using the free service, without having to reformat or resubmit.

In 2013, we launched the Journal Finder which helps authors match their article, using the title and abstract, to the most relevant Elsevier journals. The tool also provides authors with key information about these titles, such as Impact Factor, speed of publication and acceptance rate, allowing them to make an informed decision as to which journal to submit their article to.

Improving the structure and expanding the content of the article

"I would love if Elsevier would start publishing graphical abstracts…. I think graphical abstracts are more helpful than written abstract."

"It would be nice to put online the data used in manuscripts."

The Article of the Future project seeks to improve the scientific article on ScienceDirect in all areas of content, context and presentation. All articles on ScienceDirect are now under a new revolutionary three-pane format. The format is more dynamic, makes content and data more accessible and includes apps that researchers can use to get better results or work more efficiently, such as Faculty of 1000 , which allows the reader to see at a glance if the article they're viewing is recommended reading, or Interactive Map Viewer which displays supplementary geospatial data from Elsevier online articles as an interactive map.


Most journals now accept Graphical Abstracts, which summarize the contents of the article in a concise, pictorial form designed to capture the attention of a wide readership online.

Looking ahead

Elsevier wants to help all authors improve their publishing experience and output. To do that we have to continually think about the value and support we offer. Our surveys help us identify where we can make the most difference, so that we can continue to help researchers advance science.
