Knovel Announces the Winners of the 2014 National Merit Bill Woishnis Scholarship

Scholarship award honors academic excellence among aspiring engineers

New York, June 2, 2014

Knovel today named Delray Canfield and Bernadette Haig as the two recipients of the 2014 National Merit Bill Woishnis Scholarship. The scholarship was launched in 2010 to honor the life and memory of Bill Woishnis, one of Knovel's co-founders.

Bainbridge-Guilford Jr./Sr. High School student Delray Canfield of Oxford, NY, will begin undergraduate studies in mechanical engineering at Clarkson University this fall. Herricks Senior High School student Bernadette Haig of Albertson, NY, will study mechanical engineering at the university of her choice starting in the fall. Both students were selected for their outstanding academic achievements and leadership skills.

“Bernadette and Delray demonstrate all of the qualities that make a great engineer,” said Sasha Gurke, Engineering Fellow and Co-Founder, Knovel. “From involvement in music, sports and volunteer activities to student leadership and academic excellence, these students are well-rounded, curious and disciplined. We wish them both success in school and beyond.”

The scholarship application requirements included an essay, a recommendation from a school official, a qualifying SAT score and an outstanding academic record. Both students are eligible to receive a scholarship each year, for a maximum of four years, as long as they continue to show academic excellence in an engineering program.

Bill Woishnis earned a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering with honors from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, MA, and began his career as a plastics engineer for Hewlett Packard in the early 1980s. A visionary entrepreneur, Bill first co-founded William Andrew Publishing in 1990 and later co-founded Knovel. Bill’s innovations largely shaped today’s electronic publishing industry. He passed away on August 2, 2009.
