EMBiology, a new bioscience database launched by Elsevier successfully launched on Ovid platform
Elsevier partners with Ovid to bring EMBiology to market
Amsterdam, 29 November 2005 – Launched just six months ago, EMBiology is a new bibliographic database from Elsevier (producer of EMBASE). Competitively priced and targeted to small to mid-sized academic institutions as well as all pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, EMBiology focuses on basic and applied biological literature not covered in EMBASE, but also includes biological science that is within the scope of EMBASE. It is available exclusively through Ovid.
"We're delighted to be working in partnership with Ovid to bring this important new biology resource to market" said Ian Crowlesmith, Product Manager, Elsevier. "The combination of Ovid’s search interface with a unique thesaurus, which includes both EMTREE and an extensive organism taxonomy, makes it very easy for users to get very high recall and precision on their biology literature searches”.
“As one of the world’s leading sources for scholarly literature in the biosciences, EMBiology adds tremendous value to our portfolio of journals, books, and bibliographic data in the life sciences, making Ovid a destination of choice for scientists looking for a simple access to a wide variety of quality sources” said Rossella Proscia, Executive Director, Academic, at Ovid. “We’re very happy that Elsevier chose the Ovid platform as the electronic content delivery vehicle for EMBiology and look forward to strengthening our relationship with them”.
The EMBiology database contains more than four million bibliographic records dating back to 1980 and covering international biological science literature. With more than 250,000 records added annually, EMBiology offers cover-to-cover indexing of more than 2,800 active peer-reviewed journals, trade publications and electronic-only journals, almost 1,800 of which provide unique coverage of niche subject areas not included in EMBASE. Rapid record processing and weekly updates make EMBiology an exceptional current awareness tool.
EMBiology features two substantial thesauri merged into a single file: EMTREE, Elsevier’s powerful life science thesaurus, and a new Organism taxonomy with over 500,000 species names, genera and taxonomic terms at all levels, that is based on the taxonomies of the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) and Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS). In addition, the database features several fields for searching numeric indexing codes: CAS Registry Numbers, Molecular Sequence Numbers and Enzyme Commission Numbers.
