EMBASE.com Makes Important Inroad into China
Major Consortium Licensing Agreement Signed
Amsterdam, 29 November 2005 – Elsevier announces that access to EMBASE.com is now available to faculty, students, researchers and physicians affiliated with 11 of China's major universities as the result of a new consortium licensing agreement. Effective 1 November 2005, the agreement is the culmination of a wide-scale EMBASE.com trial. It enables tens of thousands of individuals throughout China at institutions of varying sizes and resources to benefit from unlimited access to this highly regarded biomedical and pharmacological information resource.
Chris Kluiters, Managing Director of Elsevier Bibliographic Databases, the producer of EMBASE.com, commented that “We are very pleased to see our relationship grow with this prestigious group of institutions in China, which allows for the expanded distribution of our flagship database, EMBASE.com, throughout the libraries, classrooms, hospitals and laboratories of China's scientists, researchers and clinicians. Access to EMBASE.com will bring greater awareness of the international biomedical literature to the Chinese."
Lee Lee Pui, Director of Elsevier S&T Division's Regional Sales Office in China, stated, “Our Elsevier Beijing office is very proud to successfully partner with Peking University Health Science Center to make EMBASE.com available to top medical universities in China and I believe that this partnership will broaden the access to medical research.”
Participating universities are Beijing Medical University, Zhongshan University, Wuhan University, Jilin University, Shanghai Secondary Medical University (Shanghai Jiaotong University), the Secondary Military Medical University, Nanjing Medical University, the Capital Medical University, Medical Library of PLA, Wenzhou Medical College and the Central South University. It is anticipated that additional universities will join the consortium in the near future.
According to Yin Yuan, Vice Director, Peking University, Health Science Center. “Excerpta Medica has long been one of the key searching tools in the medical area and is known to research staffs. Now EMBASE.com consolidates Excerpta Medica [EMBASE] and MEDLINE, making research results more comprehensive and effective. It is increasingly welcomed by users all around the world. Its value to Chinese users is demonstrated by this licensing agreement.”
EMBASE.com provides unique coverage of articles published both inside and outside of China of particular relevance to the Chinese biomedical community – from the latest information about the menace of avian flu to proprietary Chinese drugs and traditional Chinese herbal medicines such as Hochuekkito, Cordyceps sinensis, Bupleurum root and Isatidis extract, and acupuncture and related physical therapies. These articles are often not captured by other biomedical databases. High precision recall is facilitated by a sophisticated thesaurus of indexing terms, many of which are specific to Chinese medicine, concept terms like evidence-based medicine and clinical trials and trade and manufacturer drug and device name fields.
EMBASE.com combines and deduplicates citation and abstract content from both EMBASE and MEDLINE. Based on user feedback, the EMBASE journal collection will continue to expand and thereby strengthen its already strong coverage of unique journal titles from geographic areas beyond the United States and Western Europe.
