Elsevier and Shanghai Jiao Tong University Press Publish Collected Works of H.S. Tsien (1938-1956)

Collection of benchmark work in aerodynamics is product of collaboration between Elsevier and leading Chinese academic institution

London, April 16, 2012Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, today announced the release, in partnership with Shanghai Jiao Tong University Press, of the Collected Works of H.S. Tsien (1938-1956). Tsien, considered by many to be the greatest Chinese scientist of the past 60 years, began his research in aerodynamics while a student, researcher and academic in the United States.

“Elsevier is pleased to continue its tradition of publishing the works of honored luminaries such as Professor Tsien,” said Y.S. (Youngsuk) Chi, Chairman of Elsevier’s Management Committee and President of the International Publishers Association. “Chinese research will become increasingly important going forward, and Elsevier is committed to being there to support Chinese researchers and to disseminate their findings to the global research community.”

Dr. H. S. Tsien (also known as Dr. Qian Xuesen), is the celebrated leader of the research that produced China's first satellite and made pioneering contributions to many fields, including jet propulsion, engineering cybernetics, physical mechanics and engineering science. This volume collects the scientific works of Tsien and his co-authors, when aeronautic exploration moved from low speed to high speed regimes and astronautic technology took root. Dr. Tsien’s work has been lauded by many Chinese leaders, from Chairman Mao Zedong to President Jiang Zemin and President Hu Jintao.

“We are honored to publish the influential work of one of the world’s legendary scientists,” said Suzanne BeDell, Managing Director, Science and Technology Books, Elsevier. “The work represented in these pages provides a window to a great mind testing the boundaries of science during a period of immense change.”

The announcement was made during a ceremony at the London Book Fair which was attended by, among others, Mr. Binjie Liu, Minister of China’s General Administration of Press and Publication; Mr. Jianmin Han, President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University Press; Prof. Qingming Tan, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; and Ms. Dexiu Ma, Chairperson of the University Council, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The event was hosted by Mr. Shizhong Fang, Director of Shanghai Press and Publication Administration. Y.S.
