Elsevier Launches Doctor Portal, the Independent Online Voice of UK Doctors
Provides doctors with latest medical information at their fingertips
Amsterdam, 02 October 2007 – Elsevier, the world's leading publisher of science and health information, has announced the launch of DoctorPortal, an online repository of the most current medical information. DoctorPortal is advertiser supported and based around enhanced online versions of the respected and freely available Doctor and Hospital Doctor magazines. Aimed at the UK’s 150,000 primary and secondary care doctors DoctorPortal promises to be the news source for UK doctors.
As UK doctors rely increasingly on the internet for clinical information and Medicine 2.0 becomes today’s tool for busy health professionals, Elsevier's Doctor Portal is a central source of information and online discussion for doctors. Free to users, it provides a wide variety of news and clinical content of interest to both GP's and Consultants.
"This new website is a great way of accessing the major British medical newspapers," commented Dr. David E Ward, Consultant Cardiologist at St George’s Hospital, London. "There are numerous links to other sources of information with both clinical and news content. I think this is a valuable resource for healthcare workers."
Content previously available only in the print editions of Doctor and Hospital Doctor magazines is now online and delivered via an efficient e-workflow tool. Users of the DoctorPortal can search and download both clinical and practice-orientated information, including:
• Extended, authoritative daily news coverage;
• Clinical, medico-political news and financial information;
• Detailed analysis and opinion;
• Coverage of professional journals and national press;
• Growing and searchable archive of content aggregated across 26 key clinical practice areas.
"UK doctors show the greatest growth in internet usage among doctors worldwide with 90% using the internet for professional purposes," says Mary Ging, Managing Director, Elsevier Health Sciences, London. "For pharmaceutical clients, DoctorPortal now offers a high-value and credible communications option to engage more effectively with increasingly busy clinicians."
DoctorPortal has already won unprecedented media coverage for an exclusive survey highlighting fears over NHS rationing. The story, based on an online poll of almost 1,000, featured prominently in UK national newspapers, radio and TV on Tuesday 25 September. The BBC, ITN, Guardian and Daily Mail were among those to give prominent coverage to the survey, which revealed that one in six doctors has seen a patient die due to NHS rationing.
