Tony McSeán Elected Chair of CILIP Council

Amsterdam, April 12, 2006 - CILIP and Elsevier, a leading global scientific publisher, are delighted to announce the appointment of Tony McSeán, Elsevier's, Director of Library Relations, as the Chair of CILIP Council for 2006/7.

CILIP's Councillors serve as trustees and meet three times per year to discuss major issues of library and information policy, resource allocation and the management of the Institute itself. As Council they scrutinise the work of various committees covering professional education, best practice, policy development and CILIP Enterprises.

With over 30 years of experience in university, national, special and medical libraries, Tony McSeán, Director of Library Relations at Elsevier since 2004, has been a member of the CILIP (and formerly Library Association) Council for the past eight years. He has served on the Board of the European Association for Health Information and Libraries (EAHIL) since 1992-as Treasurer and Secretary, and twice as President. Tony is currently chairing a committee to establish professional accreditation for European health librarians and has spoken and published widely on library matters.

"I believe that CILIP should play an irreplaceable part in our professional lives - as the guardian of standards in the services we provide, and of the skills we need to acquire in order to provide them. It needs to develop a secure financial future and a role in an increasingly diverse information profession" noted Tony McSeán, "Through its secretariat CILIP plays a direct role in both these activities, but far more important is its focussing of members' activity nationally, and through the network of groups and branches that drive specialist and regional activity."

In welcoming Tony McSeán's election as Chair of CILIP Council, Bob McKee, Chief Executive of CILIP, commented, "The Chair of Council is an important position not only in facilitating effective decision-making within the Institute but also as as an Honorary Officer of CILIP and leader within the profession more generally. I look forward to the energy, commitment and knowledge that Tony will bring to this role and the crucial contribution he will make to addressing the challenges and opportunities that face CILIP".
