Can you comply? Yes Austrian Science Fund (FWF) requires authors to self-archive (green open access) within  12 months of publication. Posting to PubMed Central is required for FWF funded publications in the life sciences area.

Fee
  • An open access fee is required to be paid by the author, or on their behalf, for example by their institution or funder.
  • FWF can only cover open access fees under following conditions:
  • One of the authors must be the project holder and/or a project worker.
  • The FWF must be mentioned in the Acknowledgements as following: Austrian Science Fund (FWF): project number(s).
  • If the project is still running or has not ended more than 36 months ago.
  • No fee is payable by the author
Access
  • Immediate public access to the final published journal article.
  • Elsevier will send your final published article to Europe PubMed Central (PMC) and PMC mirror sites on your behalf.
  • Public access to the author accepted manuscript.
  • Journal specific embargo period applies: For a majority of our journals this is between 12 – 24 months which may be different to what is specified by your funder.

HEFCE (UK) requires authors to self-archive their accepted manuscripts in a subject or institutional repository and for these to be made publicly available after an embargo period   of 12 - 24 months.

The majority of our journals have an embargo period of between 12 – 24 months, however some journals may have longer or shorter embargoes. Please check our embargo period list.

Fee
  • An open access fee is required.

Can I comply? Elsevier authors can comply with NIH policy though green open access. Authors who wish to comply with NIH open access policy can do so by identifying themselves as funded by NIH  during the publishing process. Elsevier will then coordinate and enable posting of the author accepted manuscript to PubMed Central after 12 months.
Journal options Publish your article in a subscription journal and Elsevier will send your manuscript to PubMedCentral (PMC) on your behalf.
Fee No fee is payable by the author.
Access
  • Public access to author accepted manuscript.
  • Embargo period applies: Elsevier will send to PMC the final peer-reviewed manuscript 12 months after final publication.

The Wellcome Trust requires authors to make their research papers freely available from PubMed Central (PMC) and Europe PubMed Central (Europe PMC) within 6 months of publication.

All Elsevier subscription journals, with the exception of the Lancet , have an embargo of more than 6 months.  Therefore for these journals Wellcome authors cannot use the green open access route to comply with the Wellcome Trust's open access mandate, and must publish using the gold open access option.

  • DFID will include the cost of open access publication fees in the overall project budget and expect that authors will follow the 'gold' route whenever it is available.
