Saumaise on usury
SALMACIUS, C. De Usuris liber. 1638.
Title page of the first edition of one of the best works of the time on usury. Salmasius defends the taking of interest as a matter of principle, as nothing more than an indemnity to the lender. Salmasius spent the greater part of his life as a professor at the University of Leiden, holding the position initially created for the famous scholar Joseph Scaliger. In spite of many attractive offers from France, Salmasius preferred to stay in the Netherlands because of the freedom it offered him to say, to write and to do as he wished.
