De Laet's New World
LAET, J. DE. L’histoire du Nouveau Monde. 1640.
One of the most accurate maps of the Pacific coastline of its time, depicting California as part of the continent rather than as an island, from L’histoire du Nouveau Monde, ou Description des Indes Occidentales, by Johannes de Laet, a director of the Dutch West Indies Company. This 1640 Elzevier edition was the second printed atlas of the Americas, and the first edition of the atlas to appear in French. The EHC copy shown here was formerly owned by historian James Franck Bright (1832-1920), who served as Master of University College, Oxford.
