Cluverius on ancient Sicily
CLUVERIUS, Ph. Sicilia antique. 1619.
Hand coloured engraved title from Philippus Cluverius’ Sicilia antiqua. Cluverius was honoured with the title ‘Geographicus Academicus’ by the curators of the University of Leiden. Cluverius was perhaps best known for investigating the geography of antiquity based on not only the study of classical texts, but experience drawn from personal travel and observation. The geography of Sicily would have been of particular interest to scholars because of the Greek and Carthaginian presence in the area in classical times.
