Which RE (SAML) Federations does Elsevier support?

Last updated on April 21, 2023

Elsevier SP consumes the metadata of some federation directly (legacy reasons) and of others through eduGAIN.

Our SP is a member of eduGAIN through UK Federation.

If your federation is listed in the table then customer support can enable SAML-based federated access for you; all information you may need is available here.

If your federation is not on the list then please ask their representative to get in touch with Elsevier customer support; contact details are available at the bottom of this page.

eduPersonEntitlement

eduPersonEntitlement can be released as one of the two versions:

name="urn:oid:1.3.6.1.4.1.5923.1.1.1.7"

name="urn:mace:dir:attribute-def:eduPersonEntitlement"

The default value is:

urn:mace:dir:entitlement:common-lib-terms

The default behaviour on our SP is:

  • If there’s a tick box next to your federation in the table below, we require your IdP to release urn:mace:dir:entitlement:common-lib-terms; otherwise your users will not get access to your subscriptions.
  • If there’s no tick box then we do not require it; so if you are releasing ePE, we just ignore it.

If you would like to have that default ePE requirement changed for your IdP, you can; please contact our customer support.

eduPersonScopedAffiliation

eduPersonScopedAffiliation can be released as one of the two versions:

name="urn:oid:1.3.6.1.4.1.5923.1.1.1.9"

name="urn:mace:dir:attribute-def:eduPersonScopedAffiliation"

This attribute is optional.

If your entityID is shared by multiple organizations then the release of ePSA is mandatory; your IdP must release it, otherwise we wouldn’t be able to tell between users of different institutions, and you need to communicate the values to Elsevier customer support in advance.
