Changes are coming for ICD-10-CM/PCS for FY 2017

April 28th, 2017

The numbers have been released and they are impressive. Due to a code freeze for several years and the continued need for new or revised codes, there will be thousands of code changes for FY 2017.

On March 22, 2016 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released the list of diagnosis codes changes for FY 2017. There are 1943 changes to ICD-10-CM codes. These are available at www.cdc.gov. There are a total of 75,625 valid ICD-10-PCS codes for the FY 2017 update as of March 9, 2016. This includes 3,651 new codes which will be added, and 487 code titles which will be revised. The ICD-10-PCS are available at www.cms.gov.

The deadline is April 8 for comments on ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS code proposals presented at the March 9-10 ICD-10 Coordination and Maintenance (C&M) Committee meeting and being considered for October 1, 2016, implementation. E-mail comments on ICD-10-PCS proposals to ICDProcedureCodeRequest@cms.hhs.gov. E-mail comments on ICD-10-CM proposals to nchsicd10@cdc.gov. All ICD-10-PCS proposals are being considered for October 2016. See the ICD-10-CM C&M meeting materials to identify which diagnosis code proposals have been requested for October 2016 implementation. For all code proposals not involving a request for implementation this October, the comment due date is May 6.

A list of new and revised ICD-10-PCS codes becoming effective October 1, 2016 (excluding code proposals presented at the March C&M meeting) is available at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services website. A list of ICD-10-CM codes effective October 1 is expected to be posted on the National Center for Health Statistics website soon. The complete Addenda will be posted in June.

** Please note: Most of the lessons in our Coding, CDI, and Reimbursement curricula have a significant amount of information from multiple sources, such as Coding and Reporting Guidelines, codes, coverage policies, Quality Measures, MS-DRG, and regulatory guidance. Updated information is not released at the same time throughout the year. Elsevier strives to update content as soon as new information is available, but at times because of the vast amounts of changing information this is not possible. We do guarantee that each lesson is reviewed at least annually.
