"Autonomous vehicle (AV) and connected and automated vehicle (CAV) technologies have recently received much interest in various research communities due to their potential to revolutionize transportation systems. Potential benefits are far-reaching and include greater access to mobility for disadvantaged travelers, improved safety, and the reduction of congestion, emissions, and time for travelers.

Transportation Research Part C has received an increasing number of papers in recent years dedicated to these topics, including: traveler preference and acceptance of AV or CAV technologies, changes in travel patterns, human factors in automation, traffic state estimation for mixed traffic of conventional vehicles (non-automated) and AVs or CAVs, traffic flow modeling of mixed traffic, (macro- and micro-level) traffic control, and impact of AV or CAV technologies on traffic stability and throughput, and fuel economy.

They have advanced our knowledge of how AVs and CAVs will change the behavior of transportation systems at multiple levels of travelers, drivers, vehicles, and traffic, and how it should be controlled to improve system throughput, stability, energy consumption, and emissions.

There are many remaining questions to be addressed to realize the full potential of these emerging technologies. With numerous testbeds and proving grounds being established throughout the world, more field data will become available. Transportation Research Part C welcomes empirical papers based on real data that shed light on the detailed interactions between conventional vehicles and AVs or CAVs and how these interactions may impact traffic phenomena, such as capacity drop and traffic oscillations, traffic safety, and other undesirable elements of conventional vehicular traffic.

Transportation Research Part C also welcome papers that deal with uncertainties, for example, in sensing, communication, actuation, road conditions, and vehicle conditions. These uncertainties are inevitable elements of AV or CAV systems that may significantly affect user preference and trust as well as system performance. It is critical to understand the effects of these uncertainties and develop control remedies to minimize the impact.

Finally, these emerging technologies will result in heterogeneous traffic, where some vehicles (conventional vehicles and AVs) are in user-centric environments while others are able to cooperate for better safety and efficiency (CAVs). Transportation Research Part C welcome papers that address interactions among these types of vehicles and develop control strategies aiming to optimize system benefits." - Sue Ahn, Associate Editor of Transportation Research Part C
