An Epoxy Resin for the Commercial Market
A principal research scientist at a major specialty chemical company used Knovel to identify high-performance polymers with the right properties, and, in turn, created a new commercial concept.
Making an Epoxy Resin Into a New Product
Michael Moses*, a principal research scientist at a major specialty chemical company, was looking to extend the use of epoxy resins into areas where they currently didn’t perform. But first he needed to determine whether or not he had access to materials that would meet specific manufacturing and performance guidelines.
Before I began the project, he explains,
I asked myself: ‘Do I have an idea with a good application?’
Finding the Right Polymers
Moses used Elsevier’s Knovel database as a
jumping-off point to direct him to high-performance polymers that matched his needs and were worthy of more detailed research. The data that he found made for an encouraging start, and he used the information to quickly complete the upfront work.
Knovel provided a far more accurate and cost-effective process than a broad Internet search for materials would have allowed. Moses also looked for competitor products that might be similar to his idea, which helped him map its commercial potential by showing how he could make the product a more competitive new market entrant. His research yielded a few potential polymers with the properties he needed, allowing him to dive deeper into only the materials that were truly viable, saving him time and resources.

A New Product With a Growing Market
With Knovel, Moses was able to successfully develop his concept for a new epoxy resin into a commercial product.
Having access to that kind of information in one database was crucial, he explains.
My research would have taken much longer if I was working on my own. As the technical services staff at Michael’s company − along with the new product’s customers − explore and discover more uses for the product, its market continues to grow every day, ensuring the company’s continued success.
