Prof. Dr. Klaus Kümmerer
We are pleased to announce that Professor Klaus Kümmerer received the prestigious Water Resources Management Prize of the Kurt-Rüdiger Bode Foundation within the German Association for the Promotion of Science and Humanities for the development of an outstanding strategy and concepts for sustainable management of global water resources.
Prof. Dr. Klaus Kümmerer joined Leuphana University as Professor of Sustainable Chemistry and Material Resources in 2010. He studied Chemistry at the Universities of Würzburg and Tübingen, where he graduated in an environmental analytical theme. At the same time he completed further training at the German Institute for Distance Education in Ecology and its biological basics. After his thesis in environmental analytical chemistry he worked as coordinator in the chemical department of the Institute of Applied Ecology (Öko-Institut) at Freiburg and then moved on to the University of Freiburg. As Visiting Professor he was active among others at the Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, OH, USA). At the Department of Environmental Health Sciences of the University Medical Center Freiburg he led the section for applied environmental research as Professor for Environmental Hygiene and Environmental Chemistry.
His research is focused on Sustainable Chemistry, Material Resources and aquatic environmental chemistry. He maintains a worldwide network and is Editor (Sustainable Chemistry and Pharmacy) and Associate editor (Chemosphere) and on the editorial board of several international scientific journals. Professor Kümmerer is a member of numerous national and international commissions and committees, e. g. the Commission for Water Research of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), as a representative of the German Chemical Society in the management board of the EU Technology platform SusChem Europe and on the Executive Board of the subdivision of Sustainable Chemistry of the German Chemical Society. He regularly acts as reviewer for national and international funding institutions. In 2009 Professor Kümmerer received the Recipharm International Environmental Award for his research on pharmaceuticals in the environment.
