Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Agreement

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation open access policy(opens in new tab/window) requires authors to ensure research papers that have been accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal, and are supported in whole or in part by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation funding, are published open access under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) or an equivalent license, and are deposited immediately upon publication in PubMed Central (PMC) or in another openly accessible repository.

For detailed information about these requirements, please refer to the Gates Foundation open access policy(opens in new tab/window).

Gold open access

Authors can publish gold open access in any of Elsevier’s fully open access journals(opens in new tab/window) or Transformative Journals(opens in new tab/window). The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will pay reasonable Article Publishing Charges for articles published in these titles, in line with its open access policy.

Authors can also publish gold open access in the majority of other Elsevier journals. Where authors publish gold open access in these journals, they will be asked to agree to pay an Article Publishing Charge (APC) at the point of submission. As Gates Foundation funds can’t be used to cover these APCs, if authors (or their organizations) are unable to fund these fees, they should contact the Elsevier Helpdesk(opens in new tab/window) to discuss their options.
