World AIDS Day 2016 Virtual Special Issue Article Collection

The era of the Sustainable Development Goals has begun, and while HIV is no longer in the headlines of the global development agenda, ongoing commitment to the fight against HIV/AIDS will be crucial to various aspects of the new development targets. Revised international guidance on treatment—recommending immediate treatment for all patients with HIV—recognises the importance of treatment for all, but presents challenges: identification of people with undiagnosed HIV, particularly those with acute infection who are responsible for many transmissions; initiation of treatment soon after diagnosis; provision of affordable care in resource-limited settings; and retention of people in care. The Global Burden of Disease Study and UNAIDS figures both show an incidence greater than 2 million cases a year that remains little changed in the past decade, indicating that current approaches to prevention are not working. In 2016, these figures gave pause to the optimism of recent years and a reassessment of how to make the most of preventive approaches to address the critical issue of HIV incidence globally, nationally, locally, and in key populations. The targets call for an end to AIDS by 2030; opportunities exist to rapidly head toward that goal, but commitment to the fight against HIV/AIDS is under threat at every level. Researchers must work to show the continued value of beating HIV/AIDS and continue to innovate in prevention, treatment, and delivery to optimise the outcomes of from investments.
